  • HD Recovery

Does anyone on the forums have a recommendation for a data recovery firm that can retrieve data from a crashed, non-spinning HD? A nonprofit organization in my town has had their only PC’s hard drive die, and it is (of course) the sole source of their payroll and other accounting records. When an inquiry was made about backups I received a blank look as if I was speaking some little known dialect of Chinese.

The nonprofit has been told that data retrieval is costly, but they’d still like to have it sent out for an estimate. Any recommendations for a data recovery firm that you’ve dealt with would be greatly appreciated.

I can honestly point to Scott Moulton as a great saver of asses since he saved mine a few years ago.

I have used drivesavers once or twice. They will give you a quote for free, if you give them the go ahead and they fail it's no cost to you.

Thanks to everyone who responded, here and in PMs. Between the forums and other contacts, one name has come up a several times: Scott Moulton of http://www.myharddrivedied.com/. I’m going to start with him, and then try some of the others if he’s not available.

I have used Kroll Ontrack. If I remember correctly they will scan the drive and send you a link that sends you to a directory tree of all of the files they can recover. It was a few years back, but I think the initial scan was free or a small fee.

If it one of the newer WD HD's, the ones with the head alignment screw that is part of the case cover, you have my condolences.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. This applies to making babies, hacking, and youtube videos.

It's a 5 or 6 year old WD400 (40GB). It's nothing to me personally, I'm just trying to get something done for my client.
