Re: Rio showing sold out for August 2011

On twitter the _defcon_ twitter account announced Rio rooms available at the Defcon rate. Details copied and pasted into the thread.

Closing this misleading thread. Eventually, it may be true that there are no more rooms available for Defcon at the Rio, but it is not the case at the time I post this.

The rates at the Riv for Defcon were no deal. I always found cheaper through various online sources. I hope the Rio truly gives con goers a good rate.

Another option to save some $$$:

Gold Coast Casino (right across the street from the Rio) has rooms for less than $45/nt during Defcon. It might not be as nice as the Rio, but the Gold Coast has good reviews.

I just booked Aug 4th-7th for ~$160/including tax.

    08/04/11 = $27.00
    08/05/11 = $45.00
    08/06/11 = $45.00
    08/07/11 = $27.00

    I just booked five nights 8/3-8/7 for average $87 a night. I'm also a Harrah's rewards member.

Thank you VERY much. I will keep checking the Defcon website for a reservations link.

The Rio is owned by Harrah's Entertainment.
Harrah's Entertainment has the Total Rewards club membership, which is used at the Rio, Caesars Palace, Paris, Flamingo, Bally's, Harrah's, Imperial Palace and Planet Hollywood.

Last year around Blackhat/Defcon time, the Total Rewards promo they offered me was three nights for $79.99 a night (Caesars) or free (Rio, Paris, Ballys) depending on which casino you chose to stay at. I ended up staying three nights for free at Paris during Blackhat time, so I could chill out with friends going to Blackhat.

Once the robotic overlords open the room block we will get it on-line, I am guessing some time in Feb.

The way I see it, one of several scenarios is reality:

    0) The hotel does not want customers .. this is not the Riv, most places in Vegas want money
    1) The hotel simply doesn't allow booking that far out .. probably, unlikely
    2) Defcon has requested the hotel block rooms for booking so that attendees flood the hotel instead of normals for those days .. possibly, but that would require forethought
    3) Defcon is cancelled .. this is most likely to be the case

I wouldn't be alarmed. I haven't verified this yet, but I imagine we'll be posting some sort of registration link about 6 months out for a reserved room block, if past years are any indicator.

I have requested information on this, will verify soon.

Would that be too close considering there might be 12,000 people making reservations?
You are fine. I never ever EVER book that early, and I never ever EVER have trouble getting a room. Defcon is in AUGUST. That's a very long time from now. I'll bet that the hotel doesn't even start booking non-defcon-staff reservations until six months out, which would put it at February, at the very earliest. Relax. Seriously.

I've been attending Defcon for a very long time (since DC IV), and while it'll be nice to stay in a place that's not a total dive (although I liked the Plaza), I still wouldn't worry too much about making reservations until it gets a lot closer. Ignore the panic attack posts. Trust me.
