Blame you for all the failures, praise me for my awesomeness.. I like they way you think.

I totally agree. To sum it up: TheCotMan is awesome.

Any questions/idea's/comments/concerns.. I can be contact here on the forums or email: highwiz {at} gayhackersYOURPANTS {dot} org (just make sure to remove yourpants before sending).

I always thought it would be great to have a get together directly after DC101, however I understand timing issues with other events make that difficult.
If it wasn't for the ToxicBBQ, we would totally try that. Usually how it happens is: Right after dc101, GM1, Runnerup and I jump in the car and go on the food run for the ToxicBBQ and try to be at the park before everyone else get's there.

So yea, an "Open n00b Social", has been discussed before and is a very good idea. It's just about finding the actual time to do it.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

I think somebody will have to take one for the team to host an "open noob social" type thing; having it off-site at the Toxic BBQ sucks for anybody without wheels.

(Mods, can the "open noob social" stuff be popped out into another thread?)

For those people without wheels there is a "ride to Toxic BBQ" thread and discussion that happens on the forums and rides can be arranged at DC101. Also, the Hack Bus gives free rides to the BBQ as well. Again, DefCon is what you make of it, total strangers will give you a ride to the BBQ if YOU ASK.

If something like this was actually going to happen. I'd tend to say that Friday afternoon would probably work best. Even with 101, we do miss the n00bs who are waiting in line for their badges. So Friday makes more sense. You also don't have the Split with the amount of people going to the BBQ. Since for a "n00b open social" to work right, you'd need people who have been there for a few years who are willing to go up and engage people in conversations. And even more than that, people who are really "involved" in things would be best... And a lot of those people go offsite for the BBQ on Thursday.

If we're talking serious about it, the two biggest things you'd need are a fairly large size room (without music) and the varying expectations I usually have with 101 (That we may only have 20 people show up or 1000).

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what the purpose of an "open noob social" is? Are you talking about a place and time where any one and everyone can stand around and chat about whatever they want in an open and friendly environment, perhaps with snacks and drinks? Because if so, I am failing to understand how the Toxic BBQ (for example) does not fit the bill other then the aforementioned rides problem that I addressed?

Or the Forum Meet as another example of a "noob social" type of thing? I am NOT being facetious with my post, I am truly feeling a bit mystified by the thread subject. I am not always on the ball.

It was originally just part of my post in the forum meet thread. The idea, when it was originally discussed was between me and a few other people in relation to DefCon 101.

It really should not have been broken away into it's thread.

But BonzoESC asked, and TheCotMan did it. As such, I figured I'd give my insight as to the discussion I've had with people before, pertaining to it. And yes, it does kinda irk me that they split the thread with my post just because some random person asked...

There were a bunch of reasons we/I never went forward with the idea.

Eris, you know as well as I do, that everyone here likes "new idea's".. The problem is, a lot of people at DefCon want someone else to do the work to make it happen.

Ok, makes sense that it was a random idea that someone wanted to discuss further I suppose. A fill in "Those who are at or can't make DC101 but can't or won't go to Toxic BBQ but still want to hang out together and get to know each other" time slot sort of thing is how I am understanding it. It still doesn't seem necessary, what with the Forum Meet as well. I mean, if someone is on the forum to read this thread then they are aware of the Forum Meet time and place so it just appears redundant to me.

If the intent is to supplant DC 101 with a smaller, more targeted "dont be douche, here's what DefCon can offer you" then it's bound to fail. That service is perfectly addressed in the amazeballs DC101 event already and the folks, as you say, that could add in the "old timers" info that might be needed already did their gig at DC 101 and are off to eat meat.

              *shrug*

Exactly... Woe betide the person who stands between me and my meat.

We'll see how things go this year, but I think having the 24 hour pool back I really think a lot of the meet new people problems we've had the last 5 years will be corrected. I tend to think forced meet new people things aren't the greatest idea in the world simply because people that would attend those to meet folks probably have the balls to do it on their own. Take that with a grain of salt though since as you may have noticed...I don't have any problems running my mouth. In fact it's my favorite thing to do.

Your point about the 24 hr pool is very valid. It gives anyone an opportunity at almost any time they have available to meet and make new friends.

Any chance we can open a fire hydrant nearby for those of us who came from the inner cities?
