Yes, you can save 50% on older editions. But Thomas Jefferson once said, "Never buy what you don't want because it's cheaper."

And I learned in school, "Buy the best and you only cry once."

Check out Mastering Network Security by Chris Brenton. Security wise it is actually kinda shitty...but does a real good job of explaining how networks operate to a beginner. From that standpoint I have found most newbies find it useful.

      Hacking Exposed is good...I agree.
Practical Unix and Internet Security--out of date as hell...but still rules

If I could find Cliff today I'd totally freak him out. Him and Stanley Rifkin. Damn I'm dating myself again.

Is the book "Mastering Network Security" for sure? I ran it by bookpool.com and they have other books by him but not this one.

I try to avoid anything that has a newer edition out... but... even when I buy older editions I always have to get the new edition... some kind of crazy mania or something...

Watch hastings if you have a local one I've found books that have only been out a month or two that they decided to quit carrying que special edition manuals and such that can run in to the high 70 to 90 dollar range go for around three dollars just to get them off the shelf and out of the store.

but then again maybe it was just the hastings by my house they weent out of business after doing this for 7 or so years.

Funny thing about all this hardcopy stuff... doesn't everyone have a few gigs on technical ebooks? Most technical books nowadays come with ebooks in pdf, chm, etc..

so there are going to be book sales at the con?
are they going to be cheaper than at the store ? or online?
                    just a newbe w/ skillz

Check out the Vendor area for this:

A lot of these books cannot be found at retail places like Barnes and Nobles... I don't recall any books being inexpensive at the con. I think the key is that they will be available to be bought in cash. (quite a few "paranoid" people rather do this than order them and have the reading material linked to a cc and mailing address)

                        security books.

Maximum Security 3rd Edition was a good book :) 4th Edition is due out pretty soon im sure. Someone mentioned Hackers Challenge, I found that book very interesting - the concept of it worked fine for me. You can find it on ebay for like 9.00 brand new i keep seeing it - guess some guy bought a huge block of em or somehting :)

Hacking Exposed books take up a fifth of a row on my bookshelf, editions after editions titles after titles.

Theres also a alright book about writing and implimenting security policies by oreilly people.

                          But...

For chrissakes stay away from "Hack Attacks Revealed." The book is a thick one (not implying that bigger is always better, of course...), but mainly full of outdated source code (pages and pages and pages oh my!), and inaccurate information. I haven't read "Hack Attacks Denied," but I expect John Chirillo wrote that at about the same level of crappiness as Revealed. Bah, what garbage. At least I got it as a gift and didn't waste my own money on it. Time to go back to packing, gotta get on the road to DC in a few hours.

Security Engineering is the best sec book I've ever read

Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems
                              by Ross J. Anderson
                              http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...145679-4440920

Ross Anderson is a luminary in security design, analysis of both building up and breaking down security systems. This is a high level book, and if you don't get a kick out of it or understand it, you are probably in the wrong field.

Aderson leads Cambridge's Security group and his Serpent was a finalist for AES.
