  • Slinging contest - how far?

How far can you sling a rock with a sling you build yourself from nylon and leather?

    We open at 1/4 mile.

This has come up before with respect to Defcon. (Someone submitted a talk on creating and using slings, many, many years ago.) A few issues exist that might need consideration:

    * Where would this happen? (Maybe the Defcon Shoot? Casino Goons will almost certainly push to ban anyone from the property for using a sling, and that is a significant risk for people at Defcon, especially if the property ban lasts more than a year, and Defcon returns for more than a year.)
    * If people are trying for the first time, there is significant risk for the "shot" to not release at the right time, and hit a target or person that was not the intended target.
    * Are there any laws in Nevada that could cause police to show up? (Some states have laws covering "wrist rockets" which are like "sling-shots", often with surgical tubing, a leather pad to hold a shot, and a structure to hold it in place while the "shot" is loaded and energy is stored in the tubes.) Some police are not educated enough to know the difference between a "sling" and a "sling shot" and some may choose to pretend to not know the difference and haul you away for some other reason

Not saying, "this will never happen," just providing some of the problems such an event will have in order to get running.

    Hope this helps, good luck,
    -Cot

Yes, there are issues. A sling stone is capable of removing the mid section of a jack rabbit, leaving only the head and front legs on the right, and the hind legs on the left, separated by about a foot. (A wrist rocket cannot do this).

It might sting if you are hit by a slingstone.

For more detail, check out my postings as the knoll slinger. There you will find some of the results of my online instructions: more distance.

I would be happy to present a talk on this if I can find the time next year.

I have thrown clay pigeons. That can be a little dangerous. I once hit my Dad with a clay pigeon. His face was bleeding. He was angry. He was holding a loaded 12 gauge. He showed a lot of restraint that day.

Sorry, have not thrown skeet since.
