Re: A few questions about Defcon; I've never been to it before
This has been an informative thread.
Defcon has a very long history, and it is good to see feedback from someone that has not experienced this history. There was a time (as mentioned in another thread) where people in the audience would heckle people on stage if they disagreed with claims, or because they knew each other well, or maybe even a past history, or they are drunk. This could result in sophomoric banter, jibes and accusations on both sides, which resemble trolling. This was a large part of early Defcon entertainment, in my opinion.
Sometimes, these kinds of dialogs could become serious, with an intention to cause harm through words, or educate people on a failure. Sometimes shame was used to encourage a different behavior. understanding the difference between a serious warnings, and idle banter can take some time, so be prepared to, "back down," from antagonism if there is a serious issue being discussed.
*MOST* of the time, Priest provides this kind of entertaining interaction on stage with hecklers and people in the audience. (There are exceptions, which have caused him to spend 10-20 minutes telling the audience they suck, but he apologized for one these events a long time ago and I don't remember the last time he genuinely accused and scolded an audience of people not associated with a serious event as being the meatbags responsible for the serious event.) Most of the time, he spends around 5-10 minutes with these announcements, or Spot the Fed, and these were welcomed interruptions that were and are part of the Defcon experience. Back at Defcon 5 or 6 (probably 6) a person I knew decided to play,"Spot the Fed," with Priest and tried to spot, Priest as the Fed. :-D (If it is not obvious, the audience busted up laughing and applauding at this claim. Also, I think it was on a Sunday, if anyone has recordings of DC5/6.)
Because I have seen a few Defcon, I view and viewed HighWiz interaction with people in the audience as something like what Priest has offered and continues to offer; more entertainment and engaging people in the Defcon experience.
There is a video online, showing Defcon security goons entering a talk (actually, the video claims it was Hacker Jeopardy) with the mobile disco, interrupting the speaker. The music they were playing, possibly with video projectors demonstrated this too, and was part of the Defcon experience. Many people in the audience recognized this, and applauded. The speaker, too, recognized this, and as security goons were pulling out with the mobile disco, he yelled out, "SECURITY!" :-D (Sadly, I do not see that part in this video.)
Defcon!
There is more to Defcon than *just* the talks. Please view these interactions as opportunities to get involved and test your ability to think on your feet. :-)
Also, I want to point out to Priest and HighWiz:
NO. I am not trolling you guys.
Highwiz: If it is not yet in the unofficial Defcon FAQ, a section on these kinds of these activities could be enhanced by mentioning this.
