  • ATM Security

Talked to a security guy that had info on how poor some ATM machines are secured.
This only works on ATM's that you can see the lock on the 1st outermost door and aren't enclosed in a case.
Firstly, he said the better of the ATM machine thieves wear a mask and gloves. The camera is decent enough to get you if you don't.
The 1st door lock can be bypassed with a mac machine key which can be bought off the net.
Once you get that door open your faced with 2 alarms:
1, the callback alarm to the bank's security
2, a GPS notifier in case you think you're walking out the door with the machine
Once opened you have at most 5 minutes to get in and out
The safe can be found easily and can be picked or opened with the same master key
A typical ATM carries about 30 grand

Jackpotting is what they call it

      Re: ATM Security

Sorry to dig the post up but I think the security guy doesn't know what he is on about. I have worked on a few ATM's and none of the locks on them can be easily bypassed. They mostly use lagard cencon's which use a dallas key and a outcode/ incode. The ATM's I have worked on are constructed the same as a safe using multi point locking and relockers. There is a bit involved in opening ATM's, even with big power tools.

There's quite a lot about ATM attacks in Barnaby Jack's DefCon 18 talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htDMu7USsZQ Both opening the machine itself, and doing network-based attacks. It was a fun talk; the ATM playing music while it spits out money was a nice touch.

Why break into ATMs when you can just build a fake one and wheel it into the Alexis Park?

              Re: ATM Security

A popular way of getting into ATMs here (Australia) at the moment is to pump acetylene gas down the cash throat, and then light it up.

The safe pops with an almighty fucking bang, you grab the cash and run.

A actually smart attempt at jacking an ATM happend near me. The guy was using a skimmer. When the person would insert their card it was capturing their pin number and account info. He got caught because of poor planning and implementation.

Ours melts. You don't get much in the way of flames though, just the explosive effect required to bust the cash safe open (and destroy the surrounding wall, window and the top half of the machine which contains the computer etc. The cash is reasonably well protected and densely packed inside the cassettes, so it won't burn.

The most effective countermeasure against this sort of attack is dye packs.

                      Re: ATM Security

Barnaby Jack's ATM attacks all targeted the computer that ran the machine. He didn't address bypassing any physical security to directly access the chamber in which the money was held.
One way I've heard of, to do this, is to spray/inject freon, or some other extremely cold fluid into the lock. When the mechanism gets brittle enough, you smash it, and make your withdrawal.

not exactly a delicate and finesse-based attack.

yes, extremes of temperature (particularly cold) can alter the metallurgy of locks and make them more susceptible to brute force attacks. this is not new.

however, there's a substantial difference between doing a freon/liquid N2 attack against a mere padlock on a wall versus an ATM machine, which is designed with a multitude of layers and panels not to mention dye packs and all sorts of other counter-measures.

if you're the type of person who is ok with brute force crimes and you want loads of money really fast on the fly, i'd imagine there are more reliable ways of going about it than attacking what are essentially miniature vaults. walking into your local seedy off-track betting parlor waving around a shotgun saying "this is my winning ticket" (to continue with your theme of analogies and turns of phrase that make light of felony robbery/larceny) might net the same cash payout and be faster and not involve chemicals.

of course, waltzing into a public forum and discussing it first probably wouldn't be your best play. this is the reason why you can count on never seeing a story about me being caught trying something so foolish.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great.
