DEFCON Beer Brewers Comp.

To all of those who Brew your own, how about a friendly competition and a bit of "taste testing". I love my Porters, Stouts and IPAs and I'm sure someone out there has another stellar beer. It's a thought to consider but I think it could be fun. It would obviously require brewing before hand, probably keggings unless you're down to give away bottles, and at least 5 gallons.

Thoughts?

I'll likely be bringing 10-15 gallons with me again this year but not sure I'd be willing to give up a whole corny keg for a competition

My suggestion: Bring lots of homebrew. Then offer it to people!

This concept of a big competition has been brought up many many times. It's gone from 'Who can make the best' to 'Who can make the worst' to 'Who can drink the most'. But really, it doesn't have to be a competition. The amount of planning that goes into a competition makes things very difficult, not to mention objective judging and different categories. You would likely get a better turnout just trying to get everyone to show up some pre-determined time with kegs full of brew and share it.

I've brought 4 kegs to con each of the last several years and I've seen other people do the same. There is almost always a keg of homebrew tapped somewhere for people to drink and enjoy. That method is a great way to go.

I saw some people last year with some cornys, but I lost them in the crowd. My question is where would I drop my kegs? Where would I drop my growler? I am always open to competition, but I am always a fan of spreading beer cheer.

Unless there is an established location/venue for an official tasting, I wouldn't 'drop' your kegs or growlers anywhere. Not if you intend on taking them home with you, that is. If you want to share, bring a couple kegs to the bbq, or roll your jockey box out to one of the parties or contests. There will be plenty of people who just want free hooch but I can guarantee that you'll find brewers nearby who will be happy to talk about the craft.

Now if you're just looking to share the love, the Scavenger Hunt table always needs more beer. Always.



That said, has there been any movement on a meetup of brewers who wanna hang out and share a bit? KingRat, have you gotten in touch with anyone regarding space? If we do this, I'd be happy to show up and share. If not I'll still be happy to share, you'd just have to find me.

Hotel/Casino often have one or more liquor licenses (one per "location" selling booze) and requirements before people can gamble. They take actions to insulate themselves from risk of losing either the right to sell booze, or right to run games of chance for bets. Individuals rolling around Defcon with kegs, openly sharing their home-made booze or booze acquired outside of the Rio, if *observed* may have to face hotel Security. The Rio even forces people running Defcon contests at the Rio to buy booze from them or risk consequences.

Your best place to avoid consequences of this are outside of the Rio at a place such as the Toxic BBQ. If you want to do this at the Toxic BBQ, talk to Londo or the other organizers of the Toxic BBQ to see if they are fine with it. They may request you not have any glass containers, or have other ideas, but it would be good to work with them if you plan on offering free booze at the Toxic BBQ.

The next best place for your booze would be at *private parties* (no matter where they are) where you avoid drawing attention to yourself. For parties, you would also probably want to talk to the people running the party, as they might have requirements which could risk their party being closed down prematurely. Rolling up to a party with a hand truck and several kegs is something that would attract unwanted attention.

The last, and worst place for you to do this (the one with the greatest risk to you) is rolling around the open areas of the Defcon floor-space in an overt fashion, giving away free booze, especially to minors. This? Bad. Really, really bad. Please don't do this.

It would be wise to not admit to any plans you might have, here on a public forum.

By writing these suggestions, I am am not encouraging you to break any rules or laws; I am trying to inform you of risks associated with this. (With knowledge comes the opportunity to mitigate risks. ;-)

The official comment from a Defcon goon or staff (I am neither) would *likely* be to tell you to not give away your booze at the Rio.

Note that The Rio also has rules about how much alcohol you can bring in to their property from the outside, even if intended for your own consumption in your own room. It's a very silly limit, something like no more than a 12 pack. At least, this is what someone I know was told by an unhappy bell boy when that someone wanted to use a luggage cart to haul some cases of beer in for a private room party.

Of course, this limit likely does not apply to alcohol you purchase on-premises, at their likely higher prices.

Note that the entrance(s?) to The Rio from the parking structure(s?) is/are less obvious than the front door. As with everything, if you don't want to be hassled or cause problems, be discreet and polite and don't use the front door or ask for luggage carts.

That said, I would also love to sample your brews :-)

Much like other people have said, dont be an idiot. Be smart with how you bring in your beer, where you keep it, and who you give it to.
