Any particular reason you don't want to apply yourself? You are welcome to compete Ronin style (read: by yourself) if you'd like. Teams are one or two people.

If you have sent in a registration for Crash and Compile, you should have just received a confirmation email from me. IF YOU HAVEN'T, please DM me again here. You can also send an email to this handle on Google's fine email service.

I'll take this opportunity to remind folks that registration is still open! There's a little more than a week left to get you entry in! (By 11:59pm Pacific July 1st, 2012) Don't wait too long, get your entry in before it's too late!

The PDP-11 has 192k of RAM, most of that being consumed by the OS.

As for the D20, consider Frink on there.

Does that also apply to applicants for team distraction, or only for competition participants?

I DMed you last weekend but haven't heard back yet. Might be becasue this is a new account?!

Last year's walk on team "Random Dude Generator" would like to come back and compete this year. I think we placed second last year....

Yes we're over 21. An yes we are more than happy to pitch in for the booze.

I would use an interpreted language, how does the compile rule apply to them?

                Considering entering...

We used the D20 (A 20 sided die with a language on each side) last year so we used a mix of both interpreted and compiled languages. Last year when we used interpreted languages, we considered getting a stack trace when you initially ran the program an excuse to imbibe.

Speaking of which, can we get a list of the languages on the d20 and d12?

We lost a lot of time last year installing nearly dead languages. Of course that did give us some time to interact with team distraction, so never mind ;)

                    The D20 has the following:

                    ADA
                    C
                    C#
                    C++
                    Forth
                    Fortran
                    Go
                    Java
                    LUA
                    Lisp
                    Lolcode
                    Obj.C
                    PHP
                    Perl
                    Prolog
                    Python
                    Ruby
                    Scheme
                    Smalltalk
                    Drink++

Of those languages, we knew combined between the two of us, about six of them. We verified that we could write hello world and called it good, with the idea that we would figure out how to program in whatever we rolled during the time allotted for each problem. We used the break/fix method of programming. So it was a lot of, well lets write this and see if we can do GPIO. So even if what we were trying "worked', we still didn't have the solution, and had to take a drink. Given that we placed third, and the first year you didn't get points for drinking more beer, I think we did rather awesomely.

So changes to the D20 this year, I think I'll take Obj. C off and replace it with Frink. With Obj. C the idea was to write a gui app, so I think it's ok to lose that one.

The D12 has the following languages:

                    Basic (twice)
                    Fortran 77 (twice)
                    K&R C (twice)
                    Pascal (twice)
                    Shell
                    BC
                    Drink++

The reason we duplicated some languages, is that we really had a hard time finding compilers for the PDP-11 that would work. Oh and I should mention that for "Basic" we were using a obfuscated C program that someone had written that would take basic and turn it into an obfuscated C program and compile it. It had two things it could possibly do, work, or seg-fault. So it wasn't just writing Basic, it was writing basic in the undocumented way some guy chose to implement it. BC isn't technically a language, but really we were low on languages, and figured we would throw it on there for variety. Our editor was vi on a green screen terminal, but it wasn't multi-line vi, so we're editing one line at a time, and then would occasionally cat it out to see all our code at once.

As you may have remembered, the PDP really kicked our ass last year. When we rolled shell, we found out that you couldn't do certain things that the problem had required. Basic was no end of trouble. Both fish and I were wrecked by the end. Yet near the end I figured out how to get full screen vi working. Haven't a clue how I did it.

So this year we're coming back with a vengeance, and are giving the PDP-11 another go.

Sorry, Jax, no it didn't apply to Team Distraction. I'll try to get to that tonight.

I consider "running" an interpreted language to encompass both compilation and execution. In short, if you type "./prog2.pl" and it fails for any reason, take a drink.

Hey TheCotMan. Any way I could talk you into changing the title of this thread to:

Registration for Crash and Compile: DC20 [CLOSED]

                        just to prevent any confusion?

                          Thread title edited.

(Post titles in threads inherit the title of the thread, or post they are replying to at the time of post unless they change it. I've only changed the thread title when looking at this thread or a list of threads in this forum. To edit each post in this thread would be altering content provided by other users, and is something I won't do without their permission here. I am hoping renaming the thread is sufficient for your needs. :-)

                          Good luck!

                              thanks for the list of
Languages. I Wasn't aware that the D12/D20 was done by the psychoholics. Nice addition, btw!

                              I'll make sure to
Install as many languages as I can on our dev server, provided we make it past the prequal. Our team came in second last year, so I'm not too worried, other than some wierdness with the autograder.

I'm glad you are doing that this year btw. This is a hacker convention after all, seems appropriate to have a hacked together auto grader.

We're doing our best to make the autograder transparent to the process, but will obviously like feedback from y'all when we're done.

As for languages, I just sent an email to everyone on this topic, but I'll post here too. Because we have an autograder, we have an explicit list of supported languages, and not all the ones on the d20 are on the supported list. I'm not sure if Krux can re-paint the d20 with the new list, or if we're just going to bring it back as a trophy or something..
