  • ACTION****Stolen DefCon Art!!!!

    Hi all you Hackerites!

I need your assistance. I am Eddie the y3t1 and I had the big Art for EFF booth in the contest area. As we were packing up and loading the vehicles at the end of con Sunday evening right after the Closing Ceremony, I had a large bundle of art "walk off" from the contest room.

It was two large originals approx 30" x 48" with 5 poster sized originals and 60-100 poster sized prints sandwiched between. These were all taped together for transport with packing tape. The originals were a "skeleton riding a flying heart" and "a skull with part of a cross and a ring of thorns" and 5 "p4bl0" originals.

We worked with the hotel and security to recover but to no avail. Anyone who may have any info about this is highly encouraged to contact me at (arty3t1 at gmail dot com) or contact the moderators here. I would really appreciate any assistance you can provide and recovery will bring you some great art as a token of my gratitude.

    Thanks!

    - y3t1

Something similar happened to Joe a couple of years ago with his charity shirts in the Vendor Area. He was able to recover most of them.

If anyone has any information about this please let y3t1 know or as he said get in touch with me on here, or pyr0.

In all likelihood this is a situation similar to Joe's where the person that took them really didn't realize they hadn't been left behind and that is 100% more acceptable than intentionally stealing from someone trying to give back to the community so I say we go with that is what happened.

    Let's get this stuff back.

    Roamer.

In the vendor area at teardown I saw plenty of stuff left up for grabs. I can easily understand how anyone can think stuff is abandoned or free for the taking because it does happen. In our case the quantity sounds like it was more than a "take a penny leave a penny" situation. I hope they reappear too and will keep an eye peeled.

I would recommend having someone keep an eye on ebay and other similar sites in the ensuing couple of months as well. If they were actually stolen, a cooling off period will occur before the someone tries to sell them, if they should take that route. Also, NOT FUCKING COOL.

Stealing from the community YOU BELONG TO is stealing from yourself, you anonymous asshat.

Posting some photos of the art would be helpful.

Here are the two big originals...

The prints varied but can be viewed in general at:

                  Re: ACTION****Stolen DefCon Art!!!!

Well...it has been a while now and I have made no progress on recovering the art. I must say I have been so overwhelmed and impressed by the kindness and outpouring of support by Jason Scott (DefCon Documentary Maker) and several of the senior staff (Jeff, Nakita, and others). They have put out the word via Twitter and Facebook and several other methods and I REALLY appreciate it!

On the other end of the spectrum...The RIO has not been helpful at all. They said I needed to call them to file a report AFTER I had filed a complete report via email with descriptions and sizes and jpg photos of the art. I then attempted to call 3 times and got put on hold every attempt and put on hold several times during one attempt.

I have a "long hours" day job and can not afford to sit on hold multiple times with RIO Security. I guess they save all the competent security folks for the casino floor and not for the Convention Center area. Upon reconstruction of the time frame when the art disappeared...it is fairly likely that RIO clean-up staff removed it (perhaps innocently...perhaps not). They were the only ones anyone saw in the room during the period that it disappeared.

Oh well...I hope they enjoy it and enjoy taking the profits away from EFF.

Thanks to all who assisted in the efforts to recover it!
