    Re: DEAF CON

it's much more of a gamer reference than a purely hacker reference, but something about watching Steven show the new sign for hacker made me think of a hadouken. so i took this image and modded it a little in photoshop just now...

...that's of course way too big to be a "logo" and it's a sloppy photoshop job (the thumb and unused fingers aren't tucked in nearly enough) but perhaps it might inspire someone with real ink pen skills to create something of a hadouken DEAFCON logo for people to consider? something that reconciles our current "just the hands" concept with the hadouken using letter "H" hands.

well, fingerspelling is a little bit predictable, i think. now, if we were doing zeros and ones in fingerspelling, heh... that'd be kinda cooler. :-)

but that lends itself to a contest more than a simple logo. currently, the logo i created for the Twitter feed and such is the sign for "interpreter" but with the index finger & thumb loops holding nuts. i am likely going to want to change the logo to something similar to the new sign for "hacker"

Hope all is well. I just wanted to share a logo with everyone that I made a while back. What do you think? Could this be a design we use for social media purposes, t-shirts, a sign, etc?

Seriously, thank you everyone thus far for you help with this!!

Edit: Done. Text is all the same color, typos fixed, and commas unified. Long live the oxford comma! Now I'm going to bed. I'll probably look over it again in the morning, just be sure.
Have we heard any news from DT Deviant?

BTW I'm finally moved from Alabama! Now a proud resident of Alexandria, VA!

Awesome!!! I've had so much fun being involved with this. Deviant and theCotMan big thanks to you two for being the experts on how to go about this.

Reminder: tomorrow is March 1, and would be a good day for you all to submit your proposal. If you can convince Deviant Ollam to submit it, you have a much better chance of getting a response to it sooner, as he is an established entity with a name that would be recognized by parties involved, and has social and working relationships the members of different departments. (This is only a suggestion, like any others I've provided. I'm not doing any of the work, and control nothing at Defcon, and have no "sway" in decisions made by people in departments you would work with on this. This advice is a "best guess" based on experience.)

Also, how are we writing the event's name? I left it lowercase and the same throughout, but is it Deafcon, DeafCon, or DEAF CON? For that matter, is the correct typing of the con's name DefCon, Defcon, or DEFCON?

Edit: I went through and corrected some of the typos. Also thinking about the leaders having a Hangout on Thursday night to hopefully finalize the proposal. Thoughts?
I love how you two are debating the merits of a citation schema while I'm the linguist and I couldn't care less about that =)

Sorry I've been off the forum the last few days, my wife and I have been packing up the house for the move to DC. That and trying to get everything lined up for a smooth transition.

All of the edits look great to me. Deviant, are we feeling close to a point were we can pitch to DT or some of the other planners? I'm much more skilled at talking to people than writing proposals, as you could see with my obvious lack of writing ability. Kudos to arose4beni for being an English teacher!

How do you guys feel about a G+ hangout sometime soon to get ready to talk/send proposal to the Defcon leadership?

Cool. I'm surprised there are only a couple typos since I've been jacked up on every kind of cold medicine in existence this weekend. Hopefully I'll fix them sometime tomorrow.

The second round of editing is done. I've changed some language around and added Deviant's idea of the additional badges.

Feedback is welcomed as always. :)

Save me one of each of those please! I intend to be able to wear the former before DC21 gets going... and the latter is in case I don't manage to get enough under my belt before then! Just to prove your point about people liking badges.

Seriously though I am wanting to learn ASL and have been meaning to do something about that for years but have never gotten round to it. This may be the incentive I needed. Or I may grab one of the 'terps off dudy, buy them a beer and arrange for a lesson or two.

I love this idea though and am super pleased to see it get more form!

Are we adding the small DEAFCON hangout area to the proposal? Do we send that question out to the community?

I'm down with the labels. Document Management sounds fancy. :)
I would say something like "if there's extra room for the Deafcon people to have a table, that would be nice". Like Deviant said, we need to not sound demanding.

    I hope you feel better!
