DEFCON Documentary updates

Holy HELL!!!1!

As seen in my earlier post, and elsewhere on the internet, I've been searching for this old hacker/phreaker documentary for years. It was released back in like 2002 or 2003 maybe. Epic stuff. Single-digit DEFCON years, early HOPE cons, late night web defacement stuff, etc.

Jason Scott and I have been in touch with the film's creator for a while now, privately trying to convince her to re-release it. (There were some music rights that she never secured, so we talked about funding the payment of those rights or helping her re-edit the original, etc.) Well, it's finally happened.

... so, yeah. I'm naturally super thrilled about all this. Jennifer (the film's creator) put it on Vimeo and (at my urging, because Vimeo's streaming is kind of ass) she also enabled "download this feature" to anyone who adds it to their OnDemand library.

That means you could just all start pirating and sharing it, but I'd ask that if you really are interested in this history, consider just clicking the purchase button. She put a lot into getting this back from the grave and I hope that she at least makes back the $200 or so that it cost her to put it up on Vimeo like this.

Alternately, if you really don't want to buy it, I'm happy to have a hacker viewing party for this piece anytime I'm in the same place as any of you. You bring the whisky, i'll bring the film.

There was another film, long ago, called 0wned which appeared at some film festivals a lifetime ago and then went nowhere. I have had no luck finding a torrent or streaming video of that one.

If that node never went offline, and Dark Tangent never had his party that was DEFCON 1, what would we all be doing right now? Would Wi-fi still be mostly unsecure? Would more 0-Days be out there? Would anyone know who Mitnick is?

This is just an update on the documentary, for those of you following this project. The film is about done. At this point, all the main pieces are in place, and minor adjustments are being made to sound levels, credits, and things like this. We've about decided on the physical form factor for the special editions we'll be selling (but the film will still be released for free, electronically). The free edition won't include all the extras and out-takes. The paid editions will include lots of other content that isn't part of the main film.

The final film is going to be just under 2 hours long, and we'll be premiering the film on Thursday night, after DC101. We'll be releasing more information, publicly, in the very near future for those looking to purchase one of the special edition versions of the film. So keep your eyes out, because we are actively working to get all the details hammered out and released.

oh, wait... yeah, i've seen this. or at least parts of it. it's a fantastic little look at the CVORG folks' first experience at DEFCON.

Ashley Schwartau's Hackers are People Too and The Defcon Experience are still pretty good works.

i've enjoyed Hackers are People, Too... but i'd never seen The Defcon Experience. I'll have to check that out.

I, for one, can't wait to show world the microcosm that is DC.

While I'm (patiently, Jason, I promise!) waiting for the Defcon documentary to come out, I've been (re-) watching several others with an eye to showing them to other people to show what our community (and in a case or two, Defcon itself) is kind of like. Ashley Schwartau's Hackers are People Too and The Defcon Experience are still pretty good works. And if that isn't enough, I'd point them in many cases to the several speeches of either Jason Scott or Richard Thieme.

All things aside - I enjoy the updates and the contention. I, for one, can't wait to show world the microcosm that is DC. More so - I can not wait to see folks again this year (without the cameras).

nod. i actually learned of the new release target for the spring from Jeff just after i posted here on the forums.

and i genuinely am concerned that my comments here are somehow being misinterpreted. The only thing i was expressing was the notion of feeling in the dark about how the project was going. The twitter feed hadn't updated in a while. The Vimeo page with the preview only stated that the film was due to be released "on 2013" (was there a specific date missing from that sentence accidentally?) I have friends and relatives that ask me about the film and was hoping for something to tell them, that's all.

and i really would welcome anyone correcting me, Russ. i stand by that. if i recall previous comments incorrectly, i'd want to know about that. if there were updates about the film being posted elsewhere, i'd want to know about that (to keep up with the news). i see that yesterday, Jason did make a comment on the Vimeo page. but absent that comment, i was not aware of any news or updates coming out.

ugh. i hate being on camera. the less of me that's featured in the DC Doc, the better it will be. i'm thrilled that Jason remarked how well i can "sit for an interview" but being eloquent doesn't equate to being good-looking. ;-)

Having watched the DC20 closing, it did sound that Jason was targeting the holidays. However, we *ALL* know deadlines sleep, especially ones very loosely committed to like Jason's was.

Speaking only for myself, I thought it might have been worded a tiny bit strongly, especially for Jason's very public reputation for being a straight shooter and generally being open. That being said, I still participate in dc-stuff, so I understand the value of direct communication.

I dunno -- it seemed like you sat and came across well for Hackers Are People Too... And your talks are usually one of my favorites. (I routinely refer people to your Packing and the Friendly Skies video from Defcon a few years ago.) And you certainly don't do as much damage to the camera lens as I do -- I'm still waiting for Jason to send me the repair bill!

Anyway, that's the update. And inviting people to "correct you" if you're wrong, sounds like a terrible idea on this forum. Just saying. And at what point are you "past the point" of being able to think it's coming along nicely. It seems pretty shitty to be complaining about something that Jeff has paid for as FREEBIE for the scene.

While I'm sure much of your distress has to do with the fact that you want to see your gleaming, cheerful smile talking about the DC Shoot, I'd ask you to breathe easy for a bit.

Fair enough. Knowing Jason, there's MORE than enough material to make a good documentary here, and I'd love to see all of it... Even a "director's edition", if DT wants to release the rough cut at some point. ;) But for something that the community is getting for free (and that I can't wait to pay for to get my hands on the 'goodies'), I ain't going to complain... except about the fact that my secret Jason Scott cloning project didn't work. That's the REAL reason it didn't make it by Christmas. :P
