  • converting netstumbler files to mappoint 2002

Well I finally got my hands on a copy of MapPoint 2002 and went to the netstumbler site and ran my file through the converter and copied and pasted the output into a text file.

I know that MapPoint isnt going to open a .txt file. What extension do I need to change this ASCII output to make it readable by MapPoint.

Another question is when using NetStumbler with a GPS does the output type make any difference to MapPoint? I read on some other site that the GPS output has to be NEMA in order for it to be converted correctly.

    Thanks!:)

Telco. I would suggest downloading Mother's excellent program stumbverter. It accepts Netstumbler summary exports and maps everything out. You can use NMEA or Garmin with no problems.
    perl -e 'print pack(c5, (41*2), sqrt(7056), (unpack(c,H)-2), oct(115), 10)'

Yes Chris is right on, to make your life easier get StumbVerter from: http://www.sonar-security.com/

Use NetStumbler to Export to SUMMARY and then load up StumbVerter Create a New MAP and then Import the SUMMARY file. It will plot the APs on the MAP with their info (MAC, SSID, SIG, ETC)... Currently StumbVerter is in beta 5, and will be released to the public sooner than later, Mother is going to surprise quite a few people with the latest features ;) Also eventually, probably later than sooner StumbVerter will import native NS1 NetStumbler files :) No, using NMEA or Garmin doesn't matter because NetStumbler uses the sentence information that it supports and logs it the same... if you have a garmin and using NetStumbler 0.3.30 I would suggest using the Garmin protocol because it sends every 1 second, and NMEA sends every 2 seconds.. :) Note in the current downloadable version of SV, there is a 5000 AP limit... in the new one to be released it is 100, 000 AP limit. :)

yes, life will be so much easier :) msmp2k2 is the de facto mapping program for Windows users using NetStumbler/MiniStumbler due to the support level that exists and tools that exist such as StumbVerter, and the newly supported scripting support. :) You will save yourself a lot of headache.

Map Point and Streets abd Trips BOTH use Pocket Streets when the files are moved to a PDA. I have no inention of using a notebook PC for GPS data gathering, but I take it I need map point when converting the data only. Hmmm.

Good luck, MiniStumbler doesn't have an export feature. Generally you save your ns1 file and then copy it to your laptop or pc version of netstumbler and export it to summary before importing it to StumbVerter which generates the pushpins on MapPoint2002. which you can export to ptm and import back into your pda. :)

Sounds easy as pie. Would you honor me with a demo at the next D&B meet? That may make the event something to get others to stop by.

Sure thing, just more shit to lug... btw, the spectrum doesn't have any APs (at least that are non-cloaked). So i will bring a few data files, or you can bring yours and I will beam them to the laptop...
