  • Contest is Now Closed

The Short Story Contest is no longer accepting submissions. Thank you to all of the writers who worked against a short contest window and a tight deadline and yet still got their stories in on time! From the looks of things it will be a tight competition this year, with sixteen entries and only 4 prize packages!

1st and 2rd place will be judges choice, and of course an People's Choice opinion poll will be posted.

Again, thank you to all the aspiring writers who threw caution to the winds and GOOD LUCK!

    Re: Contest is Now Closed

I am about to ask a question that I hope you will forgive me for, but why are the people who voted on a particular story visible? I looked at a couple of polls that I'd voted on, in the past, and they didn't have names attached to votes. Perhaps there are people not voting because of this? It's stopping me.

Feel free to ignore this. Sorry to post it here, but I was hoping to ask quietly, without being too obvious. I'd have used a PM (except that I have them blocked), but thought that others may wonder this too.</quote>

I seem to recall that this was true last year as well (votes being attached to names, and visible).

DAMNIT! Shrdlu I DID NOT MEAN TO DELETE YOUR POST. *sigh* Forums and me are not friends in the am without caffeine.

You asked about the visibility of names attached to votes in the People's Choice polls and indicated that it was causing you to not vote at all and that it may be causing others not to vote as well. I appreciate your suggestions. My response is below.

"I believe it is a setting on the poll. I do hope the issue isn't really keeping people from voting, we aren't putting a new congress into power are anything. *smiley face*

Seriously, I didnt' realize it might be a privacy issue for a short story choice vote but I wil try to change the setting. My apologies."

I hope you don't change the setting, it's the "popularity contest" of the short stories... People should be willing to publicly stand by their choices.

We're not voting for democracy in a country... It's not a slippery slope.. It's a literary contest.

Highwiz alerted me to this. Forum Leader/Organizer "deletion" controls only supports "soft-delete" so we can restore any post deleted by them.

Mods can "really delete" posts, but we have a policy to not do that, as it breaks continuity and user history which is used to build reputation. Also, there is no undo to "really delete." However, I have access to look at a history of changes in a "svn" or "cvs" style of diff for committed versions, so if you accidentally edit someone's post here, I can also fix that, if not "really deleted."

The post from Shrdlu should now be restored. Please let me know if this is not the case.

I received your PM on this and saw your posts in public on this. I replied in public to try to keep this full disclosure -- someone will win a real prize based on the results of polls, so everyone should know how polls have been edited when they have been edited.

Towards this, thanks for posting your desire in public so everyone knows your intent, and I could reply in public with the the change, and let everyone know what was done.

Historically, votes were public, but there is no requirement for it to remain this way. This is under new management, so I abided by the request from Eris, and stripped out public information about how people voted. There is no undo for this that is supported by the forum software. If there is need for eris to have a list of how people voted, I think I can still find that data, but it is not trivial to have the "vie poll results" show that data again.

No one knows more than I the difficulties in dealing with life without the appropriate amount of caffeine in the bloodstream. Don't care if you deleted my post, since you were kind enough to respond. I don't believe I said anything that needed to be recorded for posterity.

No worries. I recognize the truth in Mr Wizard's comments (about it being a popularity contest, of sorts), but hope that at least a few of the votes will be given based on the actual appeal of the story, rather than on who is doing the best campaigning off line, or who has the most friends. I'm just happy to see so many people contributing stories, in this 140 character world.
