  • DC21 Forum Meet?

I haven't seen anything posted about the Forum meet this year, don't know if Bbox is still active or if someone else is going to take up the reigns?
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

You ran one of the best forum meets ever, so obviously you would be the ideal choice.

The forum meet last year was a dud. :-(

          If I had the money.

I will make the time to run it, as part of a pubcrawl, if you guys can get me the funds to do it.

HighWiz is on point with this. The forum meet Nikita ran at the Riv was hands down the best one ever (and there have been several good ones...and several bad ones).

This ain't star trek! "Make it so" only works in an idealistic community with some kind of parecon happy go lucky hippie ass economic system. ( and the occasional Ferengi gold for interstellar trading.) So, If you mofo's want a party, I need some american capitalistic dollahs.

On a serious note, I'm taking that as an endorsement from my boss and I will put together a plan with a budget and get on it. You will have your forum meet. I think Sat night works, since roamer has goon band Friday. I guess since pub crawl is going on both nights I could try to do both nights too, but I will need some volunteer staff to help me out, basically keep an eye on occupancy levels, help me make sure things are going smooth, etc.

That's because it was mostly Jews. No, seriously, we sat around and talked about my boy's upcoming bar mitzvah. Glad that's over.

And glad to hear there's a forum meet in the works.

I'd be willing to volunteer if you need help. Just let me know what needs to be done.

                      Re: DC21 Forum Meet?

                      Fellow DC-Forum Users:

This http(s) based DEFCON Forums, which has been operational since late September 2001, has been both a convenient & very useful focal point for the DefCon staff & attendees to coordinate many public topics, such as contests, events, and basically any appropriate (or inappropriate heh) aspects of the DefCon experience. It has also seemed to be especially useful for pre-DefCon planning and post-DefCon analysis/review. Unfortunately, I missed all of the DefCon's at the Riv, mostly due to my going to college and thus falling down a few intellectual rabbit holes. I agree with Roamer that some of the forum meetings in the past have sucked, and some of that was my fault (Hey, I couldn't drink back then!) but I have a feeling that this year will be very fun and well organized... it is about damn time!!! =]

I've occasionally "joked" with friends that the DC-Forums are meant for those who are "addicted to DefCon", and thus think about DefCon pretty much year-round, but this is really not a joke at all. I mean that with honor and from the bottom of my heart. There are so many great things that have come out of such a simple concept, this browser-based simple BBS community, and it is all thanks to the people who care enough to utilize it, in particular many of the DefCon staff and vital community members, contest organizers and otherwise. I am so very grateful that the DefCon community has made such (mostly) good use of this platform, and I would like to thank the current SysAdmin(s), who have done a stellar job. Bravo to TheCotMan and all others who have endured countless hours and thus maintain this online community. Thank you to all those who use this platform and I hope it continues to be useful. It was much to my surprise that this became such a useful online venue for building on an event and shared experience(s) we all know, love, and cherish... DefCon. I have met some excellent people thru both the forums and just the DefCon event itself, and I will always cherish those positive relationships, many of which have seemingly lasted over a decade.

As with DC19 and DC20, and those years at the Alexis Park (DC7 to DC13, but forum meets happened when we actually had a forum and got a room, haha... so, maybe only two or three times), I will do my best to attend the entire DefCon Forum Meet at DC21. Also, I am happy to help in any [reasonable] capacity. If Roamer says Nikita did a great job organizing the event in the years I missed, I am grateful for her operational & planning skills, so I fully endorse the decision for her to take point on this event. I am confident that a few forum veterans would be willing to assist Nikita and the DC-Forums Meet in any way possible, although many of these forum veterans are also goons and have other responsibilities.

I feel that it is too bad that BBox is afk from planning this year, but it is probably for the best, as we all deserve a fun & more party-like forum meet, as long as it doesn't conflict with the Goon Band on Friday!!! I am looking forward to meeting both newer and older forum users, and I would like to thank each and every user for their contributions to The Forums, this seemingly simple yet helpful resource to the DefCon community. The DEFCON Forums would be nothing without you, the user. Setting up the forums was really a "right place, right time, no fear" moment for me, and it is one of those things in my life that shall always be proud of (except that one time an old server got owned and some jerk posted a photo of goatse... I don't think I could ever be proud of that moment... ugh!)

See ya'll in almost exactly four weeks! I am definitely looking forward to this event, almost as much as I am looking forward to the entire DefCon experience this year... I have been going since I was 12 years old, so there is definitely some nostalgia at this point, now that I am 26 years old :]

                      -nulltone

(for those that don't know, I was lucky enough to setup this forum platform, with DT's permission and the unix sysadmin help and free hosting of "simonsays" in the early years... but it is all of you [except HighWiz, hahaha... just kidding, of course!] that have made this project/platform/endeavor a success, and for that, I thank each and everyone one of you! I even thank the lurkers, who do not post but make use of the information, even if only to check-in on last minute details about events and contests... all the users have earned my thanks and gratitude)

PS: I am uber-grateful to TheCotMan for so much hard work over the past several years... he is dedicated and seemingly super-human, and the forums would probably be haphazard without his dedication. Thanks, man. You are really great at what you do.

Thanks, but the work I do looks super human because it is spread among other people that volunteer to keep the forums working.

Thanks for starting the forums as a place for people to socialize and trade information about DEF CON.

As with any people that have been mods on the forums and left on good terms, as long as I am here, you are welcome to return back any time you are willing and able to dedicate time to doing the volunteer work we all do and you have done.

                        :-)
