Funny but I seem to be able to have the xray vision without the IR filters. Trust me, I've been able to see through clothing (especially white) while using the sony nightvision.
One time I was recording my buddy's college graduation and his mother (who was smoking hot) was wearing a tight white shirt. Needless to say, when we watched the video all we see is his mom's hot boobs. He made me turn it off and promise never to show it again. lol.

I could probably take a couple captures after blurring out the face. That's the best part though :( eh hem... well one of the best I should say. ;)
I still show it to my friends on a daily basis, the college grad is in florida right now. HA AH HA *evil laugh*

You don't see things, rather you are shown things.
Light reflects off of things based on frequency, and is translated to something your eyes understand. There are lots of things your eyes will never understand, therefore you will never see them, but that does not mean that they aren't there, or that what you are seeing isn't all that is there.
Take something that is a certain frequency, and cancel that frequency out... this is what a filter does, it cancels out a specified frequency. Use them in series, and you cancel out multiple frequencies, meaning you see things differently.
Using a filter or series of filters, you may cancel out certain frequencies reflecting off of something, inadvertently not "seeing" them... and seeing someting else.
You may not be seeing what you think you are seeing though, but you are seeing something how it is presented to you. It really isn't an optical illusion, since all that you see exists, and doesn't exist... also with all these filters in conjuction with the zero-lux you see things in non-color... it is a fun hobby though. ;)
The Sony Zero Lux IR Filters are made for different light frequencies, and generally will only work in the sun (because this requires UV)... Sony Cams that support Zero Lux have a white-out circuit(that whites out when not using Zero Lux in darkness) (that can be bypassed different ways on different models), but it is simpler to find an older model that does not have this circuit (which was placed due to public outcry of these "x-ray" cameras)... lastly the range of this "x-ray" feature is pretty shitty... there is a ton of stuff about this all over the net.
... there is no spoon.

the older of the sony night vision cameras work without this filter. once they found out what was happening they recalled all those in the stores and "fixed" them. thats why some still do it without a $200 filter.the fresh prince of 1337

I have that "older" camera and yes it works without the filter, but it woks BETTER with the filter. The newer cameras need the filter but the result are the same.
My older camera needs a new tape cage, they akk sucked on Sony, and it's about $70. So it's gathering dust.
