  • no cal meet/con

The idea was brought for a meet/mini con in no cal. East bay was mentioned as a likely meeting place.

With toorcon in so cal and three 2600 meets (san jose, sf and sac), do we want to org and do one here?

    thoughts? ideas?

I'd be interested in volunteering my time.

thoughts on what should be held, besides talks? warmup for dc11 jeopordy? hacker dating game? our own version of ctf? more dj's and chillout, less talk? basically a place to hang?

It would be kool to have a balance between DJs and the talks.....maybe a little lan party. I would be cool to have a WarDriving contest...not like i am good at it.

Would it be for a weekend? I bet we can get a hotel with a conference room, split the costs and have a great time.

My wife says the Hilton in Mountain View can get us rooms for under $100 each and comp the meeting rooms. That means free. It's all about negotiations and not letting them see you sweat.

North Bay would be like Vacaville or Sacramento, still about the same prices as Alexis Park with a minimum number of rooms. The closer to the Bay (Berkley, SF) you're talking $200 a night and then some. South Bay is the best deal.

I would be happy to set this up!

The weekend is a great time........You think that any companys like jinx would support it? And since the south bay is a hot spot for network startups......borrowing a t1 might be cheap. I am sure that the south bay would be fun to wardrive in ;-) It would be neat to say you helped start a con........since the meeting is gonna take place in the heart of silicon valley,I have a feeling that this con would grow into a huge con within a few years.

A weekend would rock!!! and mountain view would be a little bit (not much, but a little bit) more central. Can you check into that and see what we would need to put down for it?

If we had a vendor area, then I could definately see some of the vendors like jinx and ninjagear showing up.

Connectivity should be easy to arrange, once we get a place figured out. what would be a good timeframe? and wtf should we call it?

                    Connectivity is not an issue!

The T1 can be supplied by the hotel, we'd ask for that in the package with the conference room. So that's a given.

What we'd need is a schedule of events. Speakers? Games? Prizes? Job Fair? What do you like to do? I have not done Capture the Flag because it's not what I do. Maybe wardriving around the bay area?

What we'd need is commitment. If I get the place I'll pay for the rooms and we get a price based on the quantity. Divide that by those who show up. I know at the con they get $75 and it is damn well worth it, but if we roll everything into the cost of the room it should be nil.

Now at the con that have insurance alnd security issues and all that. I don't want to have 6000 folks show up and I sure as hell don't want to be sued, and I do not want to be a wanna-be defcon.

We should pick a date that is enough out to make arrangements.

                      time to get serious?

ok, before we put down any cash and commit to this completely, I think would be wise to sit down, look at exactly what it is we're trying to put on. Basically, outline the fucker, look at what it's going to take to put that on and have a solid plan so less can go wrong, athough I can image DT and krew have good stories about what can.

astcell, didn't you mention you get up the bay area alot? do you have plans to be in town soon? if we need to do this all electronically, that shouldn't be an issue, but it would be nice to put faces to the names of the folks I'm about incriminate myself with.

                      thoughts?

I dont think 6000 people will show but, nocal is in deep need of a con. I dont think that this would turn into a wannabe defcon. Like most cons like "rubicon defcon toorcon" should we contiune with the con thing?
is a con meeting possible on one weekend?......so that the few that plan on helping/running/funding can meet and talk about ideas.
                        BAWLS would probly support us.......;-)

                          BAWLCON ?

Well when we want the rooms we have to be sure, if they give us a good deal then we change our minds or say we will think about it, there goes our credibility and room to bargain in the future.

We were just up there (drat) but plan to go again to Oakland very soon. If we get good southwest ticket prices that's rock.

I know what you mean about F2F. Online it will take 3 months to do what we can in person in 30 minutes.

Oct 5-6 is my next "free" weekend and we can chat until then. Toss me all your questions to astcell@hush.com in the meantime!

Doing things online does slow them up.......Is a website in the future for this con......a name-a-con contest would be fun.
