  • Cut from "Contests/events expected to return to DC22": OCTF?

I wanted to chime in here to back kajer up a bit.

kajer is one of my teammates on vand (aka v& aka vanned), winners of oCTF @ DC16, 17 and 19. We're on very good terms with people from DC949 and TubeWarriors (livindead in particular) and they have encouraged us to run an oCTF event for DEFCON22 (we've acquired the openctf.com domain for that purpose). We had a lot of fun with aCTF/oCTF over the years, and we hope to give new attendees the chance to have a similar experience. Hopefully we can get some DC949 and TubeWarrior people to affirm their support.

The person you will need to convince is Pyr0, and or other members of his department. I help with forums, and don't tell other departments how they should run their stuff. A result is other departments don't tell me how to help run the forums. Posting in public to generate interest and public support is something that might help your cause, but the best help would be:
    * Convince any other OpenCTF, OCTF, aCTF similar event name to change enough to not confuse different contests
    * After RFI opens, immediately submit all the info requested and ask what you can do to address any concerns they have.

I only remember the drama of multiple *CTF not the results in Pyr0's department. Maybe his department no longer sees any problems with this contest and it will be approved without hesitation. He has the domain-specific knowledge, information and experience he needs to make those decisions.

    hope this helps, good luck!

I appreciate the advice, thank you.

Are you aware of anyone else planning to run anything with such a name? I didn't see one run last year, and that is one of the things that motivated us to move to run our own.

Do you have any idea when the RFI will be? It sounds like you're not sure from your previous posts, and my apologies if an update has been posted that I missed.

Should we be contacting him now, or waiting for the RFI?

Last time it forked into many was when it changed hands, and multiple groups thought they were the ones given a nod to run it the following year.

The only ones I know about this year are the ones posted in this thread -- there is so far, only one.

Last report I had was "some time in January 2014" after I asked last year. I'll ask again if there is no update in January.

I would not bug him now. There are still ~15 days left in January for him and his team to have an RFI announcement.

There was no real resolution as far as I know with respect to name. The other team didn't show up to run the game and we never resolved who actually had ownership of it legally. As far as I'm concerned V& has the nod of us to continue with the game, with whatever name they choose to use, and we'd love to see it's return.

Re: Cut from "Contests/events expected to return to DC22": OCTF?

Moved this conversation to the OCTF forum, to keep the thread for returning contests on-topic, and let people that want to find discussions about your plans for OCTF find them here, in this forum.

My reason for caution, and comments about conditions with this contest are to make sure it is understood that having a forum does not mean a contest is okayed. This is meant to be insurance against someone convincing other people, "because I have a forum, I thought I was set to go, with space, power, and networking at DEF CON. I made plans based on this, and now I'm told I don't have approval?"

The existence of contest/event forums follow the decision of Pyr0 and his department. There have been a few cases where a contest or event was initially approved, but due to misleading information by the people submitting, or failure to respond to queries, the initial approval was revoked. One of these overcame the initial revocation, after some dialogue and discussion with other departments, and shifted back to approved. The process can sometimes be a negotiation.

The best thing to do is wait for the RFI announcement, submit your info, and ask if there are any outstanding issues. Again, I don't know if there are or are not... I remember past drama with it, and caution you to manage your expectations. It is entirely possible there is no issue. Regardless, my decision or opinion on problems is irrelevant -- Contests & Events is Pry0's department.

I understand your position here, and I appreciate you moving this chunk of the thread here - it wasn't my intention to derail the discussion there.

We fully understand that until Pyr0 says we have the go-ahead to run something, we cannot assume it will be happening. He *have* begun challenge development and other prep-work for our CTF, however we are prepared for the possibility of it being denied. We started early because we know how much work it is from speaking with others who have run CTFs and we are committed to making sure we're in a position to do it right.

Understood. We have known from the beginning that there was no guarantee of our CTF being approved as OpenCTF or even under another name, and you've been pretty clear from the beginning that the forum was "tentative" at best.
