  • Eddie the Yeti "Faces of DEFCON" art, book, etc

(mods: while this thread might touch on a possibly commercial subject, it's not about selling things per se. the possibility exists that something could turn into a vendor table offering, but i hope that the thread itself isn't seen as a rule violation)

Firstly, i hope very much that folk have been following the development and creativity of Eddie Mize and his "Faces of DEFCON" project... https://twitter.com/EddieTheYeti/media ...it's a really beautiful look at many of us in the DEFCON community and a cool artwork undertaking incorporating painting with soy sauce, lemon juice, and more.

There's due to be a showing of sorts this summer, I expect, but tonight Renderman said something very cool on Twitter... https://twitter.com/ihackedwhat/stat...29373541597184 ...and I wanted folk here to get wind of it, too. I like this idea, I must say. The notion of a book of these portraits (also featuring brief "what DEFCON means to me" blurbs by each of the featured folk) is cool to me. When retweeting it, my suggestion was that the book be open-ended somehow and able to accept additional pages in future years. If each page is portrait on one side, blurb of text on the other... it becomes very modular.

What do folk think about that? Imagining a $50 or $60-ish book and the chance at $10 or $20 additional page packs in future years... that'd be pretty great, in my view. And an ongoing means of keeping the memories of DEFCON alive over time.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Eddie has stated that these will be on display at DEF CON. He attends every year to sell existing + on the spot artwork.

Currently, even the people whose likeness he has replicated cannot purchase their own original prints. This is so he may put them on display initially at DEF CON. We have not officially green lit an area where this will occur / how this will occur, but rest assured, we will support this effort!

I told Eddie that he can raid hackerphotos.com for any images he'd like to paint or that would assist him in any way. I don't know if a book would ever be large enough for everyone who deserves to be in it!

Thanks for the nod Dev. It's amazing what I come up with when drunk.

The people at con are family to me, whether you like it or not. I wanted something to have on the coffee table to show others that hackers are humans that have faces and stories.

As Dev pointed out, it's a continuous work that continues to grow. I think we need to put this to some sort of print. I'm in for $50-100 for a copy (low volume is expensive) just for the sake of great art.

There will be something at DEF CON for the art in a gallery fashion this year. What that exactly looks like will still need to be sorted.

As far as a book, I will bring this up to him during our meeting about DEF CON next week
