  • Female roommate for Luxor?

I plan to be staying in Luxor, and I am looking for a roommate.

I'm looking for another woman, ideally someone who's been to Defcon before. But if you're a Defcon virgin like me, we can help each other. :)

One of our roommates is a female, we're at the Rio if you're interested. Look at my previous post for details.

You might be better off trying to find someone from your locale (I'm not sure from where you are traveling to Vegas) who wants to carpool/fly-out with you and that you already know and trust. I've been going to DEF CON since I was 12 years old, 1999 was my first year, and uhm... it is actually quite safe and wonderful, and roommates always help you save money, but I'd only room with someone I trust enough to 1) not steal my stuff 2) not trash the room 3) not to anything sketchy! simple enough, I'd hope... and you'll find it easy to make friends at DEF CON, so don't let my post scare you, I'm just saying its easier to room with someone you can vouch for and already know, in real life or line, that makes it less likely you'll get stuck with the entire bill or anything else lame. uhm, I'm a hacker so I dont trust so easily...

Oh, another good point and reason I mention the above is because the DEF CON Forums are sadly no longer as active as they once were. You're probably more luckily looking on twitter, facebook, linkedin, or *gasp* the darknet. Actually, I take that back... DC Forums are a great place to find rideshares and roomshares, and it happens sometimes, but not nearly as much as it used to... nonetheless, as the horde, err, convention approaches, more people will be checking the forums and looking for roommates. If you're in a big city, you might want to ask people at some of the women's-only hackerspaces, or you can email those lists if you are not in a big city, and you are perhaps more likely to find a roommate that way...

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your first DEF CON. It is truly a wonderful event. Great talks, so many things to do, from the hacking "villages" for things like lockpicking and hardware hacking to all the incredibly contests and opportunities to network, socialize, and most of all learn while having lots of fun!

I'm a defcon virgin but I would totally love to share a room. The luxor is not far from the Rio right? My bro lives in Las Vegas, but... I'd rather just stay on the strip rather than drive to Henderson. Send me a PM. I'm a 27 y/o woman, but the screen name should have given away my gender.

This is definitely true. Much of the social aspect of the forums has gone the way of the "DC-Stuff" mailing list -- people are too busy to allocate time to a forum for each conference they may attend. Instead, many choose to go the easy route of FaceBook, LinkedIn, Google+, or twitter. With these generic social networking sites, there is a significant reduction to the number of accounts they must maintain, and "one-stop-shopping" is viewed by many as a time-saver. We worry about lost time so much, we even look for ways to may entertainment more efficient.

Meeting people in-person (as you suggested) either at con (more difficult) or before con (at a DCG, where you have much more time to get to know people and hear from other people how reliable they are, and how likely they are to cause you trouble) are both better than "someone you never met on a forum or social network." We as humans can often naturally pick up on threatening body language, or clues about people when we interact with them in person. This is not a perfect system, but you have more data to use than an avatar and some text.

Go to google maps, and you will see maps.google, com estimates a walk from the Luxor (Hotel) to the Rio (Hotel) in Las Vegas, NV will take 42 minutes to walk 2.1 miles.

If you manage to share a cab, to split the cost of transportation, you might also save money to and from DEF CON. The best way to do DEF CON is at the hotel of the conference, as there is less effort to get to a "safe place to sleep" and your route will likely be covered by security cameras if you are only travelling from conference area of hotel to hotel room. This is especially important if you have been drinking, flaunting large amounts of cash, or display expensive possessions that thieves might want. The area around the Rio (mostly by the back parking lot, where almost nobody ever parks or walks) is a bit more dangerous than the parking structure. Street sidewalks are often a longer route, but tend to be safer based on reports of troubles near casinos in our past. (More of an issue if you want to try to take a shortcut from Gold Coast, next door to the Rio, to the Rio, and not use the sidewalk.)

This advice is for everyone, but especially for people that plan to be under the influence.

I would kill the person who told me Henderson and the Suncoast were "right by the Strip".
