I attended blackhat last year, and i only had a mixed response on it.
You are in a different mix of persons when you sit down at lunch with random people at the tables. Very corporate. The knowledge/value/quality of the presentations is generally better than defcon, but its target audience is quite different.
YEs there is a good opportunity to network with others, but generally only if you are an american.
If I had to pay for it, I wouldnt ever attend. But if work pays for it, then sure why not.
I however did not learn anything specifically earth shattering new there, but did meet a few kewl people.
One bonus side effect of attending BlackHat is you get the kewl BlackHat badge to wear at defcon and then everyone thinks ur überleet. Someone offered me 100 bucks for my blackhat badge to add to his badge collection around his neck. I politly refused.
Defcon is where it's at :)
OH btw, when drafting my business case to the gods that be at work, in order to get funding and approval to attend, I had to base my business case around BlackHat and not defcon. To request 2,500 dollars in travel and accomodation for a 75 dollar conference would be axed and denied, where is the value in a 75 dollar conference? But I based my business case for attending BlackHat with defcon being an additional side bonus.
