Living Vicariously Through Livejournal

Livejournal has taken the simple act of recording one's daily thoughts and actions and making it an interactive process whereby other Livejournal users can comment upon an individual's entries.

While the idea of a journal that's open to the public eye seems contrary to what a journal is by definition, it's also had another side effect: the creation of a community of passive-aggressive addicts who are not only compelled to expose every detail of their daily lives to the world, but also to hang on tenterhooks for the replies they receive, thus living their lives vicariously through their Livejournal.

While I think some people are quite obsessive about it, I have enjoyed having an outlet to share a few details of my life with the handful of people that think its interesting, and likewise keep up with my friends lives. Most of my friends are spread out around the country, and even the world, and I don't get a chance to talk to them as much as I'd like to. While LJ certainly doesn't substitute for personal interaction, it does give me a way of seeing what my friends are up to, what they're thinking about, and lets me feel just a little more connected.

I don't particularly care for the people that feel they must post every intimate detail about their lives, or the ones that post personal notes to one person... but, it's their journal, and they can do what they choose. I'm just not going to be following it.

Same with my journal... some people might not be all that interested in my extremely boring life, and they won't follow it. For the rest, I post what I'm feeling, things that matter to me, cute links I came across... whatever is on my mind... or nothing, if I don't feel like talking... just as I would do if I were chatting with a friend sitting next to me. Sometimes, I use my journal to vent my frustrations, or help sort out my feelings... not in the way I would a personal diary, but rather in the way I would when talking to a group of friends. This is the way that I like to use it, and these are the types of journals I like to keep up with.

Anything more than that gets kinda creepy, and there are a lot of things that I **really** don't want to know about people!

I have a livejournal, but more often than not, i use mydeardiary.com instead. But thats only because im used to it. I find online journals my portal for saying whatever the hell i want to, because no one can say shit about it.
