It's a training ground for Feds and other folks who haven't got a clue.
Yes it is geared toward the FEDs, and corporate environment. The training is very pricey. Yes there are a lot of "newbies" in the class.
SANS training is a business just like any other (ATStake, foundstone, defensivethinking, etc.) Their main goal is to make money by teaching security.
I think they do quite well in the businesss. Their instructors are very good in instructing and explaining things. Much better than you will find at a UC or junior college.

That is my 2cents.
I don't disagree with you at all. I just think it's a waste of money for most people at a high level of experience and knowledge.
