I also saw both but liked matrix 2 alot better than xmen2. It was just on a whole different level.

One perk of a night job is walk-in opening movies in empty theaters...

I too saw both, and was equally impressed by each. I don't understand how so many people are being disappointed by them and complaining they are the usual sequal tragedy scenarios... I'd hold either of these singlehandedly up against all three Jurassic Park films any day
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

My friends and I have discussed this question before. Our conclusion echoes what others have said: a geek is a nerd with social skills. A geek is a nerd who knows more than three people. A geek is a nerd who can hold is own liquor.

Geeks are cool. I aspire to geekness.

I heard it put this way once:

A nerd is someone whose life revolves around technology. A geek is someone whose life revolves around technology, and LIKES it that way.

here, here, i second that. for instance; back in the dot com heyday we would throw our laptops in our bags and walk over to the mission ale house in downtown san jose and you would see about 60 other dot com geeks with the requisite khaki pants and blue shirts quaffing pints. a nerd would be at home running around with his light saber and talking about the dark side.

ok, maybe the khaki and blue shirt guys weren't real geeks; they were the biz dev or sales guys who are now working at starbucks. not like us IT folk who are still out of work 8 months later and just waiting for that phone to ring... ring dammit, RING!! oh sorry.

I am going to have to be another one to agree with the "Socialability" factor in "Geekdom" to be the real defining diffrence between the two

I think my strongest (not to mention ONLY) super haxor power would have to be SE... heh

and as far as running around grabbing your lightsabe and talking about the dark side....... have you been in my house again
If I had a nickle for every time someone offered me ten cents to keep my two cents to myself... I would be a rich man.

To me its a good thing to be a Geek. But not a good thing to be a nerd.

i think a nerd is just smart and likes to show it (doing every extra credit assignment, turning in research papers that are 5 to 6 pages past the minimum, etc.). A geek is a person that finds a niche and sticks to it until he knows everything about it and eventually finds friends that share the same passion.

I consider myself geek, I've been into gaming for a while and most of my friends are serious gamers.

This is something that will probably always be debated, and its at times a tough call.
Ck3k put it well in saying that its kinda a progression, and KeLviN had some excellent points as well...
My ideas follow the general ideas most other people have here, and like others, I have talked about this and thought about it from time to time. (I think its safe to say that most if not all of the people on this forum are one form of this label)
I'd have to say im a geek...
I think a geek is a less 'obsessesd' nerd.... A geek has many intrests and tends to be more 'social'. But then there is such a nerd type, who also doesn't know shit for beans... and thats the worst. At least the world can profit from the work of some nerds... the best work might even come from the basement, less distractions and all....
You might say, nerds are more intelligent than geeks... but geeks use their soical skills to a great advantage and equal it out.... but generalizations suck.
...I think this is a perfect time to preach about being 'well rounded'. Labels do suck, and... I think its more importiant to try to get out and have fun, learn to socialize and learn something non-technical. Myself I enjoy many things and have a wide varity of intrests... Geeks can play a nerd one night, and party with non-nerds the next night.
In the end, learning and doing these other things can help apply to technical more 'nerdy' problems and esp. makes you a better social engneer...

And then there are Star Trek nerds: http://maddox.xmission.com/startrek.html
Even still, exists anime nerds: http://maddox.xmission.com/anime_nerd.html

I have a question about nerds and geeks. Which type would more likely check thread dates, and read last reply before posting? ]:>

Me? Yeah. I checked the date. Right now I am wearing my asshat.
