Problem with those is that the fanny packs designed to hold your gun just scream 'THERE IS A GUN IN THIS FANNY PACK'. they're too square and rigid. That and most folks dont have their fanny packs made out of Cordura.

That may be the look some of those people are going for.
I have a Mountainsmith fanny (lumbar) pack. It is big enough to carry a composition book and the standard sized computer book. I carry my calendar/phonebook in it as well as a mini-maglite and a leatherman. I carry spare pens/pencils/highlighters. A reserve of quaters. What I really like about it is that it has outside net pockets that hold virtually unbreakable Nalgene water bottles. I have one bottle with me all the time and carry both when the family goes hiking in the nearby National Parks.:) When you guys are looking for the nearest bottle of Bawls I'll pull some water from bag and have a drink.:D
no offense to BW, but those fanny packs are usualy reserved for the mid-western tourist and east coast old ladys. but i do agree that they are very functionable, just not styln'.
I was at a bar in Hollywood while wearing a fanny pack. A couple guys came up to me and asked if they could ask a question, I said sure. They asked, "Are you packin?" while pointing at the fanny pack. I was surprised at them asking so I hesitated, then I said no, and I guess my hesitation made it look like I was thinking of an answer to give them. They told me "You're tall, you have a mustache, and you have a fanny pack, and we're in Hollywood. That just screams LAPD." Ha!

One of the guys filming "geeks gone wild" at DCX had one of those. I have to admit it was pretty handy, he had screwdrivers, leathermen, knives, radios, pda, cell phone, electrical tape, flashlight, and red bull ready to whip out at a moment's notice.
