Media keeps saying that the election of Obama to the presidency shows how far we have come as a nation. That we have come so far as a nation that we elected our first African American president.
The fact that we keep almost myopically focusing on his race really just goes to show how wrong that statement is.
"Judge a person by the content of his character, not by the color of the skin" - MLK
We still have a ways to go...
You cant say Obama doesnt have his full plate to deal with...
Now in 4 years we'll know if the hype is deserved because we will have 4 years of *action* to be able to look at and determine if he did well or not. Simply being non-white doesnt mean anything to me, because its not a job qualification. I'll elect a fucking albino midget lesbian in a wheelchair if I think she's got the qualifications and experience for the job.
I think America in general is more preoccupied with the novelty of having a non-white president and 'being part of history'. In some ways I think that does Obama a disservice, as judging from what I have seen of him *he wants* to be judged by his character and not the color of his skin. Are we really far enough along to be able to toss aside his skin color and say 'as a President he ___' or in 4 years will it still be 'as a black guy he ____'.
