  • DEFCON Shoot Convoy location :)

Given that we won't be at the Rio this year, we need to choose a new location for convoy assembly point :)

I havent been to Paris or Ballys, and so have no idea of the layout of the hotels. Is there anyone here who has been, and can suggest a place on the image below that we should use as:

#1 - An easily identifiable indoors assembly point, like the area between the two sets of glass doors at the Rio we have used in previous years.

#2 - Best place to park the cars (at either/both hotels)

I believe the Ballys/Paris parking lot is the area I have circled in red (Its my best MS Paint work!), with the entrance arrowed.

that's a really good point. i have to modify the site about that detail, heh.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I hope there are back roads we can use to stay off the strip!

well, we usually get on 15 south to depart the city... so in the past that was a relatively simple shot from the Rio out on to Flamingo. The other Caesar's properties are mostly center-strip, so Flamingo Ave is still right there, but we have a harder time getting on it possibly. I'm not sure how divided the road is on that side. If possible, we'd probably want to pull out of the rear lots and get directly on to Flamingo heading west, but if a left turn isn't feasible, then taking Koval south for a little bit, then turning right onto Tropicana would also get us to I-15.

I've updated the DEFCON Shoot Directions Page with details about this now, but this thread should be the place where "in person" meetups are arranged. I'd love to know if anyone wanders around there, what the best spot might be.

As you can see on my site, i'm an advocate for the "top deck of the parking structure" just because i think it'd be cool to have some drone footage of a lot of us on the roof with pelican cases all around, hah.

There is another way out that could be used. Exit the parking lot, drive west towards the front of Paris, round the courtyard, out to S Las Vegas Bolulevard, then north to E Flamingo, and West until I-15 south. At least there will be lights on S Las Vegas Blvd and the intersection with E Flamingo Rd, less chance of having to launch out into Vegas traffic and hoping for the best :)

Yea good luck with that. Traffic is going to be murder on the strip, you will be lucky to get 3 cars in a row by the time they get to the freeway. How about going out the back way and then going sough to a less busy street from which to enter the freeway?

I'd like to +1 that... and I'm pretty sure that all of us are accustomed the the back route... ;-)

I think the back route out to East Flamingo as per Deviant's image is blocked

the first part of that route (between the tennis courts) looks like this on street view

bah. i'm up for suggestions. this is really a greater concern to the main attendee base than to me, personally, since i have to haul myself and most of the Shoot gear out there pretty early on Wednesday.

so you folk all talk it out here and spread the word on Twitter, etc, when there's a consensus. I'll do my best to ReTweet, etc, but please no one should try to reach out to me day-of seeking details, because i'll be well out of T-Mobile range and also likely have hit a different route in getting to the Shoot.

See you all in the desert! :-)

Distribute Maps to get out of the hotel and GPS coordinates for the Lovell Canyon turnoff; hammer in a sign at the turnoff?

Better than a sign at the turnoff would be a sign 200 feet BEFORE the turnoff. DC SHOOT 200 FT. ---> would be perfect. Then we can slow down before we turn.

I just confirmed my rental car so I figured I check to see if a consensus been reached on any of the other details yet? I would love to offer suggestions but I know absolutely nothing about the area.
