HOW TO SHARE FILES IN THE DATA VILLAGE

This year we are going to try an alpha test of file sharing in the
Data Village at DEF CON 23.

The Data network will be both high speed WiFi 802.11/ac and a limited
number of gigabit network ports. The network will allow peer / host
discovery so p2p programs like bittorrent and eMule will work. The
down side is that without isolation your system can be scanned so
take the appropriate precautions!

THE PREFERRED WAY TO SHARE IS WITH BITTORRENT

SAVE TIME and build your torrents in advance!

There will be two ways to UPLOAD (share) files:

1 - P2P Bittorrent sharing:

BUILD YOUR TORRENT
For the files you want to share and use udp://10.0.0.2:1337
as the tracker address. Name your torrent something descriptive
so people know what they are going to download.

SHARE YOUR TORRENT

1. ftp upload your torrent(s) to 10.0.0.2 in the directory called
"upload-torrents-here"
This is the watch folder for the bittorrent server, and this will
trigger an automatic download of your files. This way once you share
your torrent with the p2p server 100% it will continue to be seeded
even once you leave the network.

2 - Old school FTP uploads. ftp to 10.0.0.2 and drop your files in
the "uploads" directory.

And there are two ways to DOWNLOAD files.

1 - BITTORRENT: Configure your bittorrent client to allow
peer discovery to make things easier. Now find files you want to
download!
1. ftp://10.0.0.2/ and browse the "upload-torrents-here" folder.
this is where all the shared torrents live. Now download the
torrents you want and help seed them.

2 - Old school FTP downloads. ftp to 10.0.0.2 and go crazy.

NOTES:
You can run your own servers and services. Go crazy and don't forget
to post on the white board any ip addresses to any servers you want
to advertise.

WHAT TO BRING:
There will be limited network ports and desk space with power. Bring
network cables, external storage, 802.11/AC WiFi, any data you want
to share.

Is all the data that you get from bringing a 6TB drive to the Data Sharing Village available on the Media Server on the defcon site or does the Data Sharing Village have data not posted to the site?

CaprainJTK,

Only the videos and presentations from other hacker conventions will be on the con media server and in the hard drive duplication area.

RED ALERT!

Due to food poisoning I was not able to ship the p2p server in time to make it to the convention. The wireless APs will be there but not the bittorrent server that has a copy of all the data on the con media server (dc23-media.defcon.org at ip 10.0.0.16)

It is up to you guys to build and bring some servers or services this year. We should have the open network, just not the file server.
