  • What happens when you submit to both Blackhat and DEFCON CFP?

    Hey Guys,

I'm wondering what is the process if I were to submit to both Blackhat and DEFCON CFP? Do both review boards discuss and ensure that there are no duplicate talks? Or do they discuss and decide if a talk is better suited for either event?

    Thanks!

They are independent review boards. Sometimes the content will be duplicated at Defcon and Blackhat. Sometimes the content of the same talk may be altered for each conference.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

Anyone got suggestions without dumping.me into F..Tard hall for needing answer. I dp notice alot of Defon people are also Black Hat members.

      Thanks,

I do not write for the BlackHat organization. It is a commercial entity that is separate from DEF CON. If you want to attend BlackHat as an attendee, you pay BlackHat a bunch of money. If you want to work for them, then you have to get hired/recruited by them.

Both BlackHat and DEF CON were started by Jeff Moss Dark Tangent but several years ago he sold BlackHat. He continued to work with BlackHat after he sold it, and over time, many of the co-mingled items shared between BlackHat and DEF CON were separated. For example, in the early days, a DEF CON badge would be provided to attendees of "BlackHat USA / Las Vegas". Then it was altered to just be a reduction in cost for a DEF CON badge for people that paid to attend BlackHat, with plans to eventually be phased out. The "free" DEF CON badge for BH attendees and later subsidized cost did not mean BlackHat attendees badges were given DEF CON badges without DEF CON getting anything for it. Money exchanged hands between BlackHat and DEF CON to address the cost for DEF CON badges. it is best to think of the BH attendee cost for DEF CON badges as "free" to them was actually just bundled in the cost of the BH fees. In the early days, many people that were DEF CON goon volunteers would also work at BlackHat. I think that happens much less often now than it once did.

I joined with the BlackHat review of papers one year, but did not like it and stopped after less than one year. I did not ask to join it when I joined; I was invited. Reviewing papers is hard work, and in order to fit, your idea of a good paper has to match that of the trends in the organization. If you prefer academic papers, you may nor be a good fit. If you prefer Drama-Lama type papers, you may not be a good fit. There is an art and domain-specific knowledge to proper reviews, and with DEF CON reviews, everyone that has submitted a paper gets constructive criticism and feedback on their submission.

        HTH,
        Good luck,
        -Cot

To join the Black Hat l33t hacking crew you must do the following:

          1. go to Lubertha Johnson Park at 1:37 AM the night before Black Hat begins
          2. wait for an old man with a dog (sometimes he is a young boy with a frog, just to keep you on your toes)
          3. approach him and say, in a calm clear voice, "i am prepared to reveal the information" (alternately, you can use a thick estonian accent and say "i am prepared to reveal myself to you" and you'll skip directly to step 7 if he doesn't beat you with a saving throw)
          4. you will be given a very old copy of a newspaper, look in the classified ads for a used BBQ smoker. call that number
          5. when the phone you dial is answered, someone will transmit an address to you in Morse code (it's best to have a means of recording that information)
          6. the Morse code will need to be run through a ROT filter (it's not ROT-13, i'll save you the trouble) and that will yield the name of a bar
          7. proceed to the bar you've learned about in the above step. the next step depends on which bartender is working...
8a. if Phil is working, order a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
8b. if Katariina is working, order a Natto Martini
8c. if either Phil or Katariina are "working" then disregard all this and slip them a $50 bill when they're out back on their break for the greatest fellatio or cunnilingus you have ever known (they are both skilled in each discipline)
          9. in either case, if you've ordered the proper drink it will be served on a bar napkin with one final address written down on it. drink carefully but quickly... you have to finish your cocktail before you can pick up the napkin (or else Rory Breaker will light you on fire) but condensation and moisture on the bar will cause the ink to run if you take too long
          10. proceed to the final address. there will be an empty lot with a big, tall house that is very very narrow and has seemingly no stairs or doors. a small tin pail will be lowered to you on a string
          11. toss in fifteen cents, a nail, the shell of a great-great-great-grandfather snail, and a slip of paper with a mobile number on it. the tin pail will be raised back up.
          12. that mobile number will be given an SMS message with login credentials to blackhat.com, anonymous.org, and gofuckyourself.today ... establish accounts with any usernames that you like and you're off and running! Happy Hacking!! (that phone number used for the SMS will never be used again and will also probably wind up on a watch list for the US Government, the Combine Council, and the Rhodesian Police... so it's best to complete steps 11 and 12 using a burner phone that you promptly throw into a lake or insert into the rectum of a zoo animal. Las Vegas doesn't have an actual zoo, but there is "Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden" wild animal habitat. they are open most days from 11:00 to 18:00)

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."
