  • DEF CON Shoot registration is open

Well, as some folk have already learned from Twitter, the DEF CON Shoot is open for registration at this time. This year, the Shoot will be...

    Wednesday August 3rd & Thursday August 4th

...sign-up pricing is the same as last year, with the option to just show up as a shooter (discounts available for military and folk from un-free nations) or for shooters to rent a dedicated lane if they want their own space to use as they see fit.

    New This Year...

    Campout Option

Select the "campout" drop-down option and for a small extra fee an air mattress will be ordered for you (basically at cost) and shipped to the Shoot site. We will even inflate it for you... all you need to do is bring a pillow & blankets (say, from your hotel room) then camp with us, either under one of our many canopies or simply beneath the stars. Anyone who acquires an air mattress with the "campout" registration can have this mattress stored with the DEF CON Shoot supplies in perpetuity. You or anyone you designate can make use of the air mattress in the future. It will always be out there at the site, every summer.

    Shoot Talks

By adjusting our schedule by a half hour each day, we've now carved out a one-hour break in between firing sessions and this will be time afforded to guest speakers who will offer presentations about firearms and firearm hacking. Historical facts, unique designs, new technologies... you name it, we'll showcase it. The plan is for speakers to then be afforded one of the lanes in the day's second shoot session where they will showcase the hardware that was being discussed.

    Shirt Ideas...

Remember, I and the other official staff have nothing to do with the Shoot Shirt, so discuss that in another thread so that Modofanil or others can execute on that.

    Call For Volunteers...

As always, we'll need staff to help manage the attendees and oversee safety on the lanes. Volunteers are admitted to the event for free and can make use of the "Staff" lane on the far left side of the firing line when they're not on shift. I ask volunteers to commit to two sessions out of the possible four. If you want to be on staff, email me... shoot@deviating.net

    See you in the desert!
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Gigs: the included mattress is a twin. sleeps only one person really.

            Hi OP

Thank you for your efforts and time for organizing this shooting activity.

I am interested to take part in this event but I have some questions, hopefully you could give some insights. Yes. I am new to this event.

            (1) Are we supposed to bring our own weapons? Or are the weapons on a rental basis? I do not see any information regarding weapons rental on this page: http://deviating.net/firearms/defcon_shoot/

            (2) What about ammunition?

            (3) If I were to book a lane, I could use it on both days (Wed & Thur)? Is it a dedicated lane for participants?

Thank you. Hope to see you there.

there are no weapons that i provide for official rental. some of us bring guns that others may try out, but that's never a guarantee and it just depends on who has what. often, i'd say 90% of the time, there are indeed lanes where people welcome others (especially newer or less experienced shooters)

yes, it is good to have ammunition if you are planning to shoot. ;-) no, seriously.... many lanes that let folk fire their guns have ammo but IT IS PROPER AND POLITE TO PAY THEM. so be sure to bring lots of small bills ($5 and $10 are most useful)

lanes are booked and rented on a per-session basis. there are two sessions on Wednesday and two sessions on Thursday. people are free to book as many sessions or as few sessions as they wish.

I'll have several guns available for public shooting.

                    Hey OP

First I'd like to thank you for all the work you put in to this event.

As a first time attendee for Defcon and the shoot I can barely hold back my excitement.

I am planning on being at event and had some questions wanted to clear up before preparing for the trip.

                    1. Can a someone (me) with no real world experience with firearms be a volunteer?

                    2. If one plans on being there over night should we bring food and water to last for the duration of the trip?

                    3. How is the bathroom situation handled?

                    4. Will there be more ride sharing this year?

Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication to this event and the community you have created and maintained.

                    Hope I'll see you there.
                    -Jinwoo

P.S. I hope my first forum post didn't give all those who read this aids.

while all our RSOs are people with firearms experience who are properly qualified, etc, we also have the "yellow shirt" staff members who do not have to have such background. we might have enough such staff at the moment this year, but if you email shoot@deviating.net we can talk about that more.

water is often not a huge problem. we tend to see a lot of bottled water show up each time, plus big cooler jugs, etc. as for food, it's not a bad idea to plan for something, but most of us who stay up and cook that evening will have some extra if someone is really begging and hungry, heh. pack a few Quest bars or Tanka bars or pick up some hard boiled eggs at a gas station and that should do you fine, if you're budget-tight and don't want to cook.

we have a sort-a-potty. imagine a port-a-potty but inside of a tent as opposed to fiberglass and it's made of heavy cardboard as opposed to plastic. it works. someone gets the joy of taking home the pee/poo bag and burying it, etc. they are admitted to the Shoot for free.

This will be my first time attending the shoot.

Does anyone do skeet shooting there? I'd be up for bringing my launcher, a box of clays, and a couple shotguns if there's interest.

Last year some people were shooting 2 mini soda cans out of a can cannon, and shooting them with suppressed shotguns. So there's probably interest.
The ground is rocky and hard though so bring a mallet and maybe water to soften up the ground.

yeah, that was mostly L0gic and i, and it was a damn blast. folk did the same thing again this year at the CarolinaCon Shoot (footage of which made it into my talk... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MZsJW0AbDs&t=1h10m21s)

As for the harsh ground, we now have a mallet in the official DEF CON Shoot supply bag, so maybe that will help folk out.
