Something I noticed today while poking around for mobile rig prices: http://www.aesham.com/aes6.html

Specifically: "The Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club sponsors a monthly swap meet in the parking lot at the store - it's held on the first Saturday of each month, and runs from approximately 7:00 AM thru 10:00 AM."

Since we'll be there on the first Saturday in August, this may be a good chance to pick up some nifty gear cheap (for God's sake, don't wear your 'I'M A HAXOR' shirt to this, though - hams are already anal enough about selling to non-hams, and may want to see a ticket before letting you get your hands on what you want). Just note that it does conflict with the Defcon Shoot.

Personally I believe non-hams have no business touching something they aren't licensed for. It is the non-hams that are usually the case of breaking down repeater communities and don't offer anything in return.

I agree - to a point. Look at the W6NUT repeater for plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Umm. Last I heard Scott Press bought that repeater and it's now N6SAP. That repeater isn't "THAT" bad. You can usually hear Kevin Mitnick on it late at night if the repeater is still on. They tend to turn it off at night when there isn't anyone acting as a control operator.

...I haven't used that repeater in nearly a year-and-a-half, so it may well be better. However, when I was trying to use it, it was populated with morons who would sit there and break every FCC rule, then give their callsign (!) as required by law. Dumb dumb dumb. But then, 2m is pretty much the CB of the Ham world.

Yeah. I never actually talked over it. It's generally best not to let those people know you exist since they seem the type who'd show up at your house in the middle of the night and cut your coaxial to your antenna just because they disagree with you. I usually monitor the TRW repeaters and one of the large linked repeater systems that covers the area.

You can always buy one of Uncle Iras PRC-77 (pronounced 'prick seventy seven') radios. I know Astcell would love one. He's got some of the new military spread spectrum radios too.
