Some of you may remember a buddy of mine who came to the Shoot last year for the first time. Shaf Patel, totally blind since birth and from the UK, had never so much as handled a firearm let alone shot one.
He came to the Shoot last year, and had an UNREAL time. He was totally safe, loved all the attention and care that others showed while making sure he understood what was up, and he got an experience that was unlike anything he had ever dreamed of in his life.
He would like to come back again this year.
Is there anyone out there who can make this happen? I will gladly comp his badge, but we need a volunteer (or volunteer team) who can guarantee the following...
1. a spot for him in their car going to the shoot
2. a spot also in the car coming back from the shoot
3. most of all, this is not just transportation... someone is needed to escort Shaf around the Shoot site and be with him while he is there.
Shaf is a remarkable person and totally competent and safe. In no way do I wish to convey that he's incapable of anything to which he sets his mind. However, it is simply best responsible practice for us to have someone there to assist him (or anyone else who is blind and would want to come, which i encourage!) so that at all times there is ZERO doubt in his mind that he is remaining behind the firing line and in a safe area when he walks, etc. Also, the ground out there is a little uneven and the whole site is unregulated, so this is all the more reason that best prudence dictates he have a minder while on site.
This is a substantial endeavor. It will take up the bulk of one person's time (and hence i am wondering if a team of two or three people would like to do this) and can't be a situation where someone volunteers to do it and then flakes off after a while. That is NOT OK. If you say you will do this, you HAVE TO actually do it for him once you're out there. No bullshitting.
Shaf is a great guy and a key figure in the hacker world. If you can help see that his participation at the Shoot is again possible, i'd be very grateful. Please email me at shoot@deviating.net if you are able to help.
