  • Announcement! DEF CON 29 Virtual attendee badges are sold out.

We've sold out of the virtual attendee badges for DEF CON 29. Thank you to all the remote attendees who supported us by ordering a badge. Online attendees can still support DEF CON by purchasing a Human+ code at shop.defcon.org.

    ❤️ U.

Ahhh! That's what I get for putting off registering for so long! 😭

Any chance there's a waiting list? Or could there be any extra that will go on sale later? PLEASE!

My answer is not official, or about what will happen, only a comment about the past:

I know of no waiting list, and the history of waiting lists for DEF CON events (official or not) is sufficiently problematic that there probably won't be a waiting list for badges.

In the past, when we have run out of badges when sold in-person, we *sometimes* later find that some badges were misplaced, or lost then found. When this happens, we resume sales of the badges we found until they run out, instead of alternates. (I am not part of that production to know if that is the case or not this year.)

This year's event more complicated with a virtual badge vs. in-person badge.

If something like that happens, depending on the circumstances, it will probably be announced in social media and the forums.

      Good luck!

Good news, everyone! We have re-opened badge sales for virtual attendees! The gods of the supply chain have smiled on our undertaking and blessed us with additional stock. Take advantage at shop.defcon.org!

Well not much change for me since my country was never allowed to buy a badge, since the very start! 😤 I wrote to info@defcon.org but never got even an acknowledgement. Is that intended? Since when the organizers don't need the money? This is the first time I miss a badge since I started attending every year, many years ago.

Try sending an email to shop@defcon.org instead.
According to https://shop.defcon.org/ the virtual badge has sold out. I think it has been that way since June 17, 2021 , maybe before:

June 17, 2021, 1:21AM Pacific time: We’ve sold out of badges for online attendees....

It was again tweeted on July 15, 2021: https://twitter.com/defcon/status/1415587305708871688
We've sold out of the virtual attendee badges for DEF CON 29...
The in-person badges are picked up in-person, so no need to ship.

We had gotten another batch in of Virtual, and sold them between June 17 and July 15, but that was it for parts and supply chain.

In-person badges appear to be sold out too. Is there any chance of some being available to get in-person? Or is DEF CON really sold-out?

Where do you see that in-person badges are sold-out?
When I visit https://shop.defcon.org/ (July 19, 2021) I see that the virtual badges are sold out, but that the in-person badges do not show up as sold-out. It looks like they can still be purchased today.

(Update: I read elsewhere people reported seeing out of stock on the in-person badge, but I didn't see it so I can't confirm these claims. The in-person badge was still available through https://shop.defcon.org/ when I checked today. I just checked again at around 10pm pacific time, Monday, July 19, 2021.)

edit: Should we expect in-person sales to be a thing this year?

It could have happened. I'm not going to deny it. I just don't have evidence of it.

So now you all have a date. As of July 20, 2021, online purchase of in-person badges for DEF CON 29 on https://shop.defcon.org/ end on July 29.
Unlike past years, there is a cap on total people allowed to buy a badge in-person.
1,000 spaces is the limit for people that want to gamble for a chance at those 1,000 entries to con available for purchase with cash in-person for in-person DEF CON.

If there is another batch of virtual I would like to add to the list. I check the DEF CON 29 shop and saw that only in-person can get badges by July 29. I was going to come down this year but decided not to get the last minute because of my concern with COVID. I hope some more virtual spots open up.
