    Blackbeard by Angus Konstam

Recently read Blackbeard by Angus Konstam

More a history book than a novelization. Covering the Golden Age of Piracy (1697-1726). A surprising short period of time considering the number of movies made about pirates. I wouldn't say the book is riveting but an interesting history. Helps put all those movie characters into place with actual history. Interesting to see who was a real pirate being referenced versus a composite character we have seen before.

Considering the forum, an interesting tie-in is the concept of privateering. Essentially officially sanctioned piracy. Shipowners and captains could approach their government and obtain a "letter of marque" which entitled them to prey on the enemies of the state of the high seas (pg 8). It has been brought up a few times under different language in the hacking community.

I am not promoting any position but two potential questions derived from the book.

Was there or is there a golden age of hacking?

Would a hacker privateering model be realistic in today's world to help scale and address workforce challenges in today's nation-state protections?
