The time has come to conclude our first Phish Stories contest by announcing the winners! Before I get to the nitty gritty, I wanted to thank all of the participants who really went all out in creating some clever and humorous scenarios. We were honestly blown away by the quality. They all "got it" when it came to what we were looking for. To give you an indication of just how close this competition was: all five entries made it into the top 3 for at least one of the panelists. We had to hash it out after each panelist came back with their scores and talk through what made each entry special.
Without further adieu:
The Ruler - rrunner (1st place)
- rrunner's backstory and phish checked all of the boxes. It was a credible phish approach, with a descriptive background and creativity that shined through. The addition of a referral code was a nice touch and "The Commission of Cream" had us chuckling. The amount of work and research put into this one was incredibly thorough and good. Well deserving of "The Ruler" title!
The Jester - birdbird
- birdbird took us on a wild ride with their hilarious scenario. Who knew "Parrot School" and Paul Hollywood would collide in a phishing attempt? The e-mail's use of a URL shortener added a nice technical touch. We couldn't stop laughing!
The Wizard - danmulvey
- danmulvey's phish was simply irresistible. The sense of urgency and clever use of an e-mail thread made it the most "clickable" entry we encountered. It was direct, effective, and made us want to take the bait.
Thank you all for your outstanding participation. The competition was fierce, and each entry had its unique charm.
We'll be coordinating with each of the winners via e-mail for badge pickup!
We hope you enjoyed reading the entries and consider giving it a shot yourself next year, we're already mapping out a new scenario and hope to "run it back" for DEF CON 32!
