Since there's no pre-registration for DefCon2024 - how does one get "in-line" for the workshops at 0700 on Thursday - will registration be available on Wednesday?
2024 Workshop signups - do they require badge prior to signup?

I do not run workshops. Historically, workshops were announced and listed in this section of the forums for each DEF CON. Ii this case, this is the forum for "DEF CON 32 Workshops":
https://forum.defcon.org/node/248126
Usually, what happens is 1-8 weeks before Workshop Signups becomes available, they are listed on the forums (details about each workshop sometimes edited with links to where people will eventually be able to signup once reg is opened.) (NO SIGN-UP HAPPENS ON FORUMS: only details about workshops have historically appeared on the forums.)
Then, an announcement is made somewhere on social media, 1 to 60 days before sign-ups are available to specify a DATE and TIME and TimeZone for when people will be able to signup for workshops.
People with the strongest desire to get a workshop seat set reminders on calendars or devices, and sometime take time off work for the date/time when seats become available online for selection.
Popular workshops have historically filled up within seconds to a few minutes while all workshops are often completely full in less than 1 hour from the time they open up for people to select,
Here is an example from LAST YEAR (DEF CON 31):
https://forum.defcon.org/node/246045
In the case of DEF CON 31, eventbrite was used for people to be able to get workshop tickets, but the option to get tickets was closed until the date/time they would all be announced as available.
It is possible eventbrite will be used again. Maybe something else will be used.
Historically, the sign-up for workshops is ALL DONE ONLINE. People either get a seat in a workshop or they do not.
HISTORICALLY, there is NO in-person sign-up for workshops AT DEF CON.
Next, HISTORICALLY, access to the space where workshops take place require:
1) An actual DEF CON Badge. (Not a token, not a receipt for a badge, not cash for a badge, not a picture of a badge... a real badge.)
2) A valid ticket for a seat in a workshop.
Some people trade seat/tickets online before DEF CON, but historically, there has been no support for that in-person, and there are risks for people that make trades online.
Historically, the first day of workshops is on Thursday, which include some morning workshops, like this one from LAST YEAR:
https://forum.defcon.org/node/246037
Thursday, 9am
Thursday morning workshops create another complexity since you need a DEF CON badge to get to workshop spaces, in addition to a ticket/code for a seat at a workshop.
However, badge sales often start early Thursday morning, so people with Thursday morning workshops need to make arrangements to get in the "DEF CON Badge" line early enough to get their DEF CON badge and then make their way to where workshops take place before their workshop happens.
Historically, since DEF CON Safe Mode (last few year) people have been able to buy a "DEF CON Badge *token*" which can be redeemed *in-person* for a real DEF CON badge just like cash purchases. Buying a token for a DEF CON Badge can get you a badge, but HISTORICALLY you CANNOT use the DEF CON Badge "code"/"token" instead of an actual DEF CON Badges to gain access to the workshop spaces; you need a real DEF CON badge. If you get a token for a DEF CON badge, you will have to redeem it for an actual DEF CON Badge to gain access to the workshop spaces, and then also have a workshop code.
Be sure to plan for all of this. It may happen the same way, or may not.
Everything above is a description from the past. Keep checking for updates, and be sure to make plans.
Good luck!Last edited by number6; January 15, 2024, 19:39. -
When I receive updates from the people that are responsible for organizing the workshops, I post them. I have no updates. I do not run the Workshops department. Sometimes the sign-up date/time are announced weeks or months ahead of seat being available, while other times, only days before the process to sign-up goes live.Originally posted by gavin-torHas there been any updates to the workshop sign-up date?
My usual turn-around-time for being assigned ToDo for announcements or content from various departments (Speakers/Presentations, Villages, Contests/Events, Workshops, etc.) is within 24 hours of being assigned a ToDo for these.
I understand not having a scheduled date several weeks in advance makes it difficult to request time off work for that day, if that is what you plan to do, but again, I do not run the Workshop department and do not set date for sign-ups to decide when to announce what the day and time will be with method.
I cannot give you what I do not have. When I have it, I post it. Good luck!Last edited by number6; March 16, 2024, 11:59.Comment

It is not clear if these are from this year (2024 for DEF CON 32) but if you check out https://info.defcon.org/events/ and then choose the top-right settings, you can limit display to just workshops and I see a listing of workshops with days and times for Thursday Aug 8 through to Saturday August 10.
HTH
(Again, I do not run workshops: an organizer for workshops can confirm if this list is indeed for DEF CON 32.)Last edited by number6; June 30, 2024, 10:04.Comment

I do not run workshops or coordinate for them. If an actual organizer provides content that disagrees with mine, go with their information.
Historically, the second spots for Workshops become available, people rush to get a spot in their preferred workshop.
Seats in the most popular workshops are often consumed in less than 1 minute once they are made available.
In less than 1 hour, it is very common for all spots in all workshops to be taken.
Some people take a day off work and set reminders to be available to get spots in workshops right as they open, then as the time for availability approaches, they keep requesting the pages work workshop spots until they see it is open, and start the process.
So, advice? It is not that workshop spot selection is only open for 1 hour, but there is so much demand for workshops that all of the spots in all of the workshops can be taken in less than 1 hour.
Many people use many different methods to try to speed the process of getting their workshop selected and complete check-out, like web browser auto-fill/paste of saved information for online forms to fill-out form data and checkout very fast. Some people may use other methods to speed their checkout to get their workshop spots. Find a method that is fastest and most reliably works for you.
If you do not get a spot in a workshop that you wanted, there is often a forum thread where people attempt trades.
Jeff made this one for this year: https://forum.defcon.org/node/250027
There may also be a swap discussion on reddit, but I didn't see it last time I checked.

The popular ones usually fill up inside 15 minutes - doesn't seem to have gone live yet according to my browser.Comment

aaand they are almost all sold out, I never even saw the ticket button with constant refreshing...Comment
-
Same. Everything said "Unavailable" every time I refreshed until nearly 12:20 in some cases and then suddenly it was sold out in under a second. For the very few that I even saw a purchase button it had sold out by the time I pressed it. I guess if you can't automate your ticket reservation you may as well not waste the timeComment

Wouldn't mind seeing the workshop tickets allocated by random selection from a pool rather than having to 1/ be available and 2/ continually smash reload + purchase.
Simply register your interest, be selected if you're lucky enough, accept the invite. Sure there's problems with this too, but seems more reasonable and accessible?Comment

I'm not doing luck, insecure trades, days off work, automated bot games.I do not run workshops or coordinate for them. If an actual organizer provides content that disagrees with mine, go with their information.

How about I / we just classify workshops as vaporware and move on?
Just trying to stay in reality here.
Thanks.Comment
