Forthcoming Executive Order on Data Privacy

Several news outlets are reporting this week that in the coming days the Biden Administration plans to release an Executive Order to stop foreign countries from accessing Americans’ private data. Bloomberg News reports that the the order will restrict the sharing of data including genetic information, location, and other data of national security concerns that it is currently possible to legally obtain.

If an EO gets released we will be sure to follow up with the full text in this thread.

Yesterday the White House released its EO on Data Privacy, particularly aimed at preventing sensitive, personal data about Americans ending up in China or Russia. You can read the text of the EO here to see how the U.S. Government is planning to implement things. There are a couple of other supporting documents you can check also including a Fact Sheet and a message to Congress.

Is this the start of a broader data privacy push that may lead to new legislation? Or will these steps be difficult to implement and sustain?
