Hey all!
I walked through the new space at the West Hall of the LVCC with the rest of the DEF CON crew Saturday to give it the HDA lookover.
There is good news and bad news, as folks like to say.
The good news : The venue is amazingly accessible! It was designed that way and it has been kept up that way. The meeting rooms are double wide doors, no more annoying bump strips in the doorways to get hung up on, the elevators are huge, and well maintained - I seriously doubt we will have the problems we had last year. As an added bonus the food court is as accessible as you would imagine! The only thing I would say is that it is huge! It will be a good thing to plan ahead to attend the presentations you want to see to ensure you can get around in time.
HDA is going to have a space right by the entrance and next to registration. That means we will be there for you right as you walk in. Due to the accessibility of the venue there is no more need to patrol broken this and make a new path around broken that!
Now the bad news.
The biggest challenge you will face with ADA needs is getting to and from the venue and your hotel. It will be summer, and it will not be easy if you can not take a taxi or the city bus. The monorail , that is usually out savior, falls short this time because the path from the monorail station to the LVCC is an accessibility disaster. The sidewalk along the road is dangerous at best, and the only other option is cutting across a staging area to the North hall , and talking the indoor bridge. It's still a distance and outside. City bus, Taxi , and if you can use it the Tesla Loop are the best ways I've found so far. Keep in mind that the Tesla Loop is not ADA 100% accessible , and if you can not fold your equipment up to fit in a car you will be out of luck.
Up next, is some unfortunate but expected complications with mobility equipment.
Because of the LVCC policies , you can only bring mobility devices if they are medically prescribed and approved. This means your power wheelchair, scooter and so on must be an approved medical device. Anything else is not allowed, nor can it be plugged in to be recharged.
They have had problems with non medical mobility devices causing electrical problems, battery fires , and so on and they have clamped down on this.
On the other hand, they have a contract with a rental company that will rent mobility aids that are approved. HDA is working to get you all the details on that. Hope to have it all in place this week.
I will be tearing up the city trying to find the best ways to get to the new venue, and forward thinking people can look hard at the Marriott for next year as it is directly across the street from the west hall entrance.
So that is all for now. Drop your questions here!
