Over the weekend Committee Chairs from the House and Senate released a draft of a new data privacy law they are working on titled the American Privacy Rights Act. This would be the closest thing to a comprehensive data privacy law in this country and includes enforcement mechanisms in addition to making the hodgepodge of state and local laws fairly obsolete. You can take a look at the draft law at this link. It is not yet clear what the odds are that this draft would become law, which means there are opportunities for experts of all stripes to make their thoughts known to try and influence the law and improve it.
