THE UNOFFICIAL DEF CON SHOOT, Wed., Aug 7

    Where: Pro Gun Vegas
Address: 12801 US 95 South Boulder City, NV 89005
When: Before the con Wednesday Aug 7th, Registration opens at 11am, Intro and safety 11:45-noon and we start just after that.

The Unofficial DEF CON Shoot is a public event that happens just prior to the DEF CON hacker conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is an opportunity to see and shoot some of the guns belonging to your friends while taking pride in showing and firing your own steel, as well, in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We choose a spot, then we rent tables, canopies, and bring all the necessary safety equipment and amenities. All you need to bring yourself and (optionally) your firearms. New shooters and veterans both attend regularly. You can attend with your firearms, of course, but folk without guns of their own in Vegas may have the opportunity to try gear from others in attendance or to inquire with the ProGun range about whether rental firearms are available from ProGun.

This is a 100% off-site event and a DEF CON badge is not required for entry.
Shooter registration is $20, lane registration details will be posted in the future
    Starts
    August 6, 2024
    Ends
    August 7, 2024

The Defcon Shoot pre-registration is open for shooters badges for entry ($20+$1 fee), and for lane reservations ($50). Pre-registration is not required, you can pay cash on-site, however lanes often sell out so if you want to reserve a lane session pre-registration is suggested.
A shooters entry badge is required for all participants (prereg or onsite), a lane reservation is not. Usually only people bringing firearms reserve a lane, and lanes can be split between multiple people. The cost of lanes went up $10 but each session is slightly longer, shooters entry badges remains the same price as last year though we will probably have to increase it next year.
We transitioned to a new website this year: https://dcshoot.org/ and we are using ballistictools for payment. To lend some credibility for this new process the old website redirects to the new site.

Should it still be possible to pre-register for the shoot? The button to select the payment options doesn't show any options.

After entering your address you have to hit continue before attempting to set your payment method. Or are you having a different issue?

I'll likely be attending and pay dues onsite. Currently trying to work out transportation. Are you going?

The newbie's guide to the DC Shoot

      VERY IMPORTANT RULES

ALWAYS treat your firearm as if it is loaded

ALWAYS point your firearm down range

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

ALWAYS be aware of your target and what is beyond it

If you pull the trigger and the gun doesn't go BANG, continue pointing it downrange and alert a range safety officer (RSO), they will assist you

The people wearing the orange safety vests are the range safety officers (RSO)

Their main job is to ensure that everyone is being safe while handling firearms.

In addition they are in charge of their range, they will tell the shooters when their range is HOT (guns go bang bang) and COLD (ALL firearms are unloaded and placed on the table with an open breach/breach flag in place)

If you have any safety concerns alert them immediately

Follow the direction of the RSOs.

If you ever hear whistles or an order to CEASE FIRE, STOP firing IMMEDIATELY, safe the firearm and put it on the bench.

      Basic things to know

Where - The dcshoot website has directions and other info dcshoot.org/directions.html

      When - 1100->1715

Where to park - Pro Gun clubhouse (the lot in the back is closer to the shoot)

The bathroom is - in the Pro Gun clubhouse

      Things to bring- ( ** = mandatory)

      ** Common sense

** Eye/ear protection (registration may have some earplugs)

Water, consider bringing electrolyte mixes as well to replenish lytes lost by sweating

      Food

      Money (see below)

Sun screen (don’t get burned to a crisp, that would make it very hard to enjoy DefCon)

Why money? For several reasons, if you didn't pre-register you will have to pay to play $20. People may be selling things like shirts ~$20 and possibly other things. People may have a “tip” jar that helps pay for the ammo that you are shooting (ammo is expensive). If people are going to "rent" their gun they should have prices posted, if you are not sure ask if there is a charge.

When getting ready for the shoot, dress as if you will be standing on the sun for a few hours. Sunglasses, hats and sun hoodies are your friend. Wear closed toe shoes, hot brass between your toes sucks, also the desert has many sharp and pointy things in it. Don’t wear low cut shirts, hot brass on your tummy isn’t fun. Another thing to think about is getting a evaporative cooling towel, they are inexpensive and do a good job.

Eye and ear protection is MANDATORY when on the firing line. When you are not on the firing line it is up to you, it is highly recommended that you keep ear protection in whenever the range is active.

      DOs and DONTs

(DO)VERY FIRST THING WHEN YOU GET TO THE SHOOT, GO TO PRO GUN CLUBHOUSE, stop in say hi tell them you are here for the Defcon Shoot and that you need to sign the waiver (its free and mandatory to use the range). Once that is done walk up the hill to the registration tent (at range 5) and sign in. If you haven't pre-registered they will want $20. If you have signed up for a lane this is when it will be assigned to you.

DONT pick up any firearm until that guns owner gives you permission to "ask first, touch later". If you have ANY questions or are unfamiliar with how the gun works, STOP. Ask questions and learn how the gun works (most importantly the SAFETY), before you pick it up.

DO respect the wishes of the person who rented the lane, they are in charge of it. Not all lanes are open for everyone, some people just want to hang out with their friends and shoot. Most lanes are open to all, if you have questions just ask.

DONT get dehydrated, there is stuff to drink at the registration tent and in the Pro Gun clubhouse, If you have gone for more than 3 hours without having to pee, you are probably dehydrated. DRINK DRINK DRINK.........

DO wander around and see what is going on, if one range has lines then you may have better luck elsewhere. There are 3 different sessions during the day. When a different session starts one shooter may have left and the new one may have new and interesting things to see/shoot.

DONT overheat. Heatstroke is no joke, it can be fatal. Take care of yourself, if you are not feeling well go to the clubhouse where it is air conditioned. Cool down, drink water and take a break.

DO have fun, meet people, ask questions, be nice, thank the people who are letting you shoot their guns.
