What is DEF CON Movie Night? How can I participate?

I do not run DEF CON Movie night.
People do ask how to participate.
I'll try to help with directions:

    DEF CON Movie night:
It was an event just at DEF CON, but has become an online, weekly event with discussions happening on the DEF CON Discord Server, every Saturday starting at 8pm pacific time, America/Los_Angeles, PDT/PST, UTC-7/UTC-8 : it presently follows DST changes WRT the TZ of "America/Los_Angeles".

It is run by sleestak (forum user) and "DCSleestak" (userid: 350422507951620098) (discord user)
His blog for Movie night can be found here: https://forum.defcon.org/node/235218

    How it works:
People download a movie, or have a local copy (bluray, dvd, etc.) or join a video stream to watch the agreed-upon movie.
People join the DEF CON Discord Server channel for movie night on the correct day and time and start playback of the same movie at the same time.
If people arrive late, they can estimate where people are in the movie by how many seconds have passed since 8pm pacific time.
People then provide comments, jokes, constructive criticism about the movie they are watching together similar to how "MST3K" has worked.

    (1) How to get to the DEF CON Discord Server:
During the pandemic, DEF CON Safe Mode supported an online experience, which included using a Discord Server. Details about how to join the DEF CON Discord Server can be found here:
    https://defcon.org/html/defcon-safem...scord-faq.html

NOTE: there is a feature for "humanplus" but as of the time of this article being created, "humanplus" is NOT required to join the channel or watch the movie.

(Basically, people can read text/images/links in open/public channels without humanplus. Human plus opens up a few extra features that can be abused to annoy users, so to get access to potentially abusive features, people pay for humanplus with an understanding that if they abuse those features, they can lose the humanplus they paid for, losing that cash, discouraging them from abusing those features.)
(Details on humanplus if you really need to know: https://plus.defcon.org/ )

Again, as of the creation of this thread, HumanPlus is NOT needed to participate in DEF CON Movie Night.

    (2) After joining and activating your account on the DEF CON Discord Server (see above) then you may need to add a "role" to your account on the DEF CON Discord server.
Locate the channel "Roles" : https://discord.com/channels/7082082...25994981245008

Example image of what you might see in your Discord client:
Roles channel sample text on making choices on roles

As of May 28, 2025, here is an image to show you what your discord client may show you in the "roles" channel:
markup of previous image showing which is the key of choices and which are selectable to change roles

Here is a markup to indicate with "blue" reference to white-text annotation the roles/emoji key to show to which each role the emoji/reaction refers, and offers a description for that role.
The "red" box encloses the actual "emoji"/"reactions" that can add or remove a role that corresponds to the key name and description.
If you click an emoji/reaction on your discord client (not these images) then that toggles your membership with that role:
    * If you do not have the role corresponding to the given emoji/reaction, clicking that reaction adds that role.
    * If you do have the role corresponding to the given emoji/reaction, clicking that reaction remove that role.

At the time of this article creation, the "social" roles grants you access to the movie night discussion channel

    (3) Once you have enabled the roles needed, you can visit the "movie-night-text" channel (https://discord.com/channels/7082082...67993617924227
Once you make it to this channel, look at the "topic" and look at the "pins" : the topic and pins often provide information on what movie has been selected, when it will start, and offers some suggestions on how to watch it.

If you have constructive criticism on the directions provided, and how they can be made clearer, please reply below with what is broken and how you think it should be fixed.
