Defcon Wifi Shootout Update #1

Greetings Contestants,

Less than a week until Defcon, and we are excited about working with all of
you!

This email is to let you know that the location for the log times have
CHANGED. Log times will NOT be done on the roof of the Alexis Park Hotel.
In fact, due to a recent decree from the Las Vegas Fire Marshall, NO Defcon
activities AT ALL will take place on the hotel roof (yes, that means no
giant tent full of fun and frivolity, as in previous years). We were
informed of this situation by Defcon staff last Saturday morning, and have
been weighing our options ever since.

However, nothing about the awards ceremony and spectacular prizes has changed!

After getting over the initial shock of all Defcon activities being banned
from the roof, we realized that our available options will actually provide
for a much MORE exciting contest, in that you will be able to go for much
greater distances than you ever could have gotten from the hotel roof. The
hotel roof was actually picked as a compromise for the sake of convenience, but didn't really allow very great line-of-sight distances. Instead, the new log time location will allow you to really get that signal OUT THERE!

We have some choice locations picked out that are within easy driving
distance of the hotel, and should give awesome line-of-sight distances. We
are arriving in Las Vegas on Thursday (the day before Defcon begins), and
will make the final location selection at that time.

To keep everyone from having to drive around so much, there will now only
be TWO log times, instead of six. As described on the updated website
(http://www.home.earthlink.net/~wifi-shootout), all contestants will meet
in the lobby of the Alexis Park Motel at noon on Friday (8-1-03), where you
will learn the contest location, and we will proceed from there. DON'T BE
LATE to this meeting, as it will only last until 12:30, and then we're off
to the contest site for the first log time! Contest staff will stay on
site for two hours, or until all distances have been logged, whichever
comes first.

Another meeting will be held the next day (Saturday, 8-2-03) from noon
until 12:30 in the hotel lobby, and we will proceed from there to the
contest site for the final log time. Again, you will have two hours to log
distances.

Of course, there is nothing to prevent you from practicing all you want at
the contest location, day or night, so you are totally prepared when the
log time arrives!

We will also soon be sending out an FAQ of sorts to cover various contest
details and questions that have come up (for example, due to the heavy
military and aerospace activity that surrounds Las Vegas, we've decided
that rockets and weather balloons are a pretty bad idea). PLEASE send us
your comments and questions.

Greetings Contestants,

Here's the contest schedule:

- Meet in the lobby of the Alexis Park Motel at noon on Friday (8-1-03),
where you will learn the contest location, and we will proceed from there.
DON'T BE LATE to this meeting, as it will only last until 12:30, and then
we're off to the contest site for the first log time! Contest staff will
stay on site for two hours, or until all distances have been logged,
whichever comes first.

- When we arrive at the contest site, we will set up a "base camp," at
which all teams will set up one end of their link. Then, teams will send
members out into the field (or, down the road, as the case may be) to set
up the other end of their link.

- Meet again the next day (Saturday, 8-2-03) from noon until 12:30 in the
hotel lobby, and we will proceed from there to the contest site for the
final log time. THIS WILL BE THE LAST CHANCE FOR NEW TEAMS TO REGISTER.
Again, you will have up to two hours to log distances.

- Winners announced and awards presented the next day (Sunday, 8-3-03) at
the official Defcon awards ceremony.

To address various questions and ideas that have come up:

- Due to the heavy military and aerospace activity that surrounds Las
Vegas, we've decided that rockets and weather balloons are a pretty bad
idea. Land-based nodes only, please.

- No relaying, no repeaters, no wifi bridges.

- Teams need to have someone at each end of their link, with a setup at
each end capable of sending and receiving a specific text message to be
supplied on the spot by contest staff.

- Bring plenty of power for your equipment, i.e., extra laptop batteries,
etc. Even better is a power inverter to supply AC power from your car
battery. I bought one from an auto parts store for $30, and it powers a
laptop and access point just fine. A friend of mine bought a huge one, and
can run a full desktop computer inside his car! Don't forget power strips,
extension cords, etc. If you have a GPS, bring it.

- We will be outside, so bring a jug of drinking water, and wear cool (not
"kewl") clothing (not knit "Polo" style shirts!). A hat is recommended,
and you may even want some sunblock lotion.

- When you have set up, tested and practiced, and you have a distance you
want to log as an official entry, it must be verified in person by contest
staff. That means we have to be able to find your field team members, so
be prepared to use your wifi link to transmit your field location back to
base camp. Once you've send and received the specific text messages
supplied by contest staff, a GPS location will be logged. Each evening,
distances will be calculated and verified using
