That doesn't always happen. Thankfully, all the con-kids I'd seen come to be have been awesome.

I just sold my 1,500$ sony vaio subnotebook and bought a 300$ warhorse of an ibm thinkpad 600e, which is as indestructable as laptop's come.

I decided the 333 extra mhz (400mhz vs 733mhz), and a few grams of weight, wasn't worth the 1,200$ worth of worry.

After spending every cent I had on the best, and then finding it not so desirable, I revert back to my original feeling that nothing beats second best when it comes to portable technology.

Now... with a cheap laptop, open source software, and cfs of sensative information, the burdeon of constantly worrying if my laptop is stolen or damaged is reduced to nearly nil.

Thats my .02 cents.

Aside from my pos laptop for internet, dvd, and notes...

Cell phone - Essential for communication and finding friends around the con

Water Bottle - hydration

Good coffee - the rooms have coffee makers, but shitty coffee

Lots of cool clothing - its hot, you'll sweat a lot, and probably want to change shirts a few times a day, especially if the ac sucks again

One piece of folded printer paper and a good pen - to scratch down quick notes (still works better than any pda available)

Also essential: open mind, and no hesitation for a good party or adventure on the town. Every year when I'm not at the con I find something awesome in town. Last year I even managed to get on top of one of the hotels and chill for a few hours with a girl I met. I bet the broken lock I found is still broken also... I'll be the first one checking up on it and this time I'll bring some more friends up there.



I'll be the one at defcon floating around on the inflatable chair in the pool with my new/old thinkpad and a beer. See you there.:D
