  • Several Novice Questions

im a novice, knowing only the basics. I am using win98, please no anti-windows talk or u should upgrade talk.
    Questions
1.what application should i use to open .ini and .sys files? Is there any public site that states a list of this info? I accidentally screwed the shutdown logo splash screen trying to change it .Now its logow.sys.bmp. I have also screwed up other files.
But it s ok because i on a test computer learning.

2.How do you remove stubborn files that wont delete or remove without touching the registry.

3.This may be because of my sorry sound card but my cd audio (playing a burnt cd) slows down and stops continually .What to do?

My situation is very frustrating because i have no money tha t means no mcse type courses. what might i read to learn more (remember i am a novice) so that i can have a intimate knowledge of the operating system. books ,sites etc.

It sounds like you are not playing audio through the analog connection between your CD player and sound card (if you have one) but rather by reading the CD digitally. I would suggest you attempt to find an option to disable in your player of choice, try a different CD player, and be sure to try a real CD in addition to just a CD-R.

      1. use notepad.
      2. boot in to DOS if files wont delete when in windoze.
      3. does the cd play on your home stereo?

      try the mighty google.

for the extentions just when you need a file figure what you want to open it in. Other programs can open it themselfs usually.
I don't really understand what your problem is with the splash screen in windows though. If the problem with the splash screen is only the name then just rename it.

he probably can't rename it to logow.sys from logow.sys.bmp because there's probably still an existing logow.sys in the same dir. not that it should really matter, last i checked, logow.sys was just part of the windows 9x splash screen, not like it's an essential part of windows.

                  Look for something like

                  [X] Read CD using CDDA

                  or

                  [X] Read CD digitally

In the preferences and uncheck it. What player are you using, anyway? You still haven't answered that...

Ok i am using the regular cd player(win 98), for some reason when i try to change cd audio player to open with mplayer2 it doesnt work but anyways. Before the cd player would just run without sound, that is when i went to the device manager and change the settings around until checking READ CD DIGITALLY seemed to work but not well thus the sound problem.

Well, I'm afraid I can't help you much. The next step would involve purchasing a cable to run from the CD player to your sound card, provided the problem isn't something simple like the mixer being turned down. You would need to determine yourself which type of cable you need as they vary.
