where to start...

i've been wanting to learn alot more about network and internet security (sorry but really couldnt be anymore specific as of yet). i really am new to this topic so ive been reading up in these forums and decided that id post my own plea for advice. where should i start?
i know a bit of c and am more than comfortable in windows, i'm planning on getting linux up and working on my desktop , but from there? (books, ideas, etc...)
