  • Yaesu radios

Hi all, appologies if this is the wrong form but I think it fits into the wireless settings.

I'm looking at getting a yaesu vx7r and was wondering what people thought of it compared to other hand helds?

Also does any one know if there is any difference between the US and European versions.

I assume that you can allso use this to talk to people with FRS handhelds, is this possible if they use the security features?

it is my favorite radio, my last being a radioshit single band wonder of crap... very nice, programmable, software modifications... vx7commander is nice if you don't already use your ADMS-1G software...

At this time there are no 800Mhz modification for USA (A2) VX-7R's
the US version does not have any cell mod support (at all), where the Jap/Euro Version does (and can be modified via software)...

... for use with FRS just use the freeband mod and you are all set.... of course this all implies FCC/HAM regulations regarding amat radio usage.

online - easy as pie... rarely are you asked to provide credentials.
in person - sometimes not as easy as you are asked your call sign - and are ill-prepared with such viable information - some retailers simply will not sell to non-hams... others are just wanting the money....

... You know it is really easy to get a license for technician class, even with the recently changed pools... http://www.arrl.org/ and qrz.com ... here is the link for the practice tests: http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl ... practice for a couple of weeks and you will ace the test... or you can do it the slow boring way and memorize the answers one by one - http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/pools.html ... 10 bux(locally priced) for 10 years... and you can't go wrong.

One last one BW (thanks for all the info)
is it likely to be an issue for a non us resident to buy a hand held when going to a shop (especially if they dont yet have a licence :)

Check out the new HAM forums hosted by c2Security http://www.c2security.org/ham/index.php

Also check out the online reviews of the VX 7R at eHam.net
            http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2350

Finally, your best bet online retailers are HRO:
            http://www.hamradio.com/

            and AES:
            http://www.aesham.com/

As for your questions, I agree with BW. The Vx 7R is great. Buying online w/o out license is easy for US Residents. I don't know about Canadians.

You might want to consider just getting your license. It is really pretty easy and there are tons of online resources and practice tests:

            http://www.w8mhb.com/exam/online/
            http://199.245.125.13/p/testing.pl

            Good luck.

Right, sorry to drag this up, in the end I didnt get the vx7r while in the states, but I've found a supplier who is selling a B2 version but mentioned that they could set it up to be a B3

Now from what I was aware there were only the following types

              TYP: A2 USA
              TYP: C2 Eurpe
              TYP: A1 Japan
TYP: B Can be configed for any country.

Does any one know what the B2 and B3 are.

It depends on the ROMs the radio is using - so usually it's just easier to get the one you want for the band you can't normally get wherever you are now.

My bad - I evidently hit 'edit' on your post, not 'reply'. Or we can put it down to a gross abuse of moderator powers in an attempt to confuse you for our own nefarious ends :)
