this is just to write about some of the setups i have seen for maximum gain. most people out there just seem to plug the fucker in and drive. well i think this is retarded however, as you get very little signal. i use the proxim orinoco b/g combo gold card, and yes it DOES have the external connecter, just make sure you buy a pigtain for the PROXIM ORINICO, or you will be screwed lile me and your pigtail will be forever stuck on the end. anyways. i have my card hooked to a simple magmount 5dB omni-directional on the roof of my car. signals are great. i can pick shit up miles down the road. in houston, i drive down the freeway pretty much never loosing net connectivity. i dont actually mean surfing because the networks switch so fast, but i can always see something at all times.
most people for some reason start goin into this homemade can shit, yes it works, but imagine what you would get with a can or panel directional antenna, with an AMP? most kids dont even know of 2.4Ghz amps. neat thing is, they are BI-DIRECTIONAL! which most of the time, the RX gain is higher than TX. rflinx.com sells a very nice 800mW bi-directional amp for 180 with nice gains. Tx is around 12 to 18 and rx is from 15 to 20 i believe. with this setup and a nice omni-directional, you should be feared lol. but overall, USE ANTENNAS! they are awsome.

For those whom didn't get Astral's humor; wardrivers have no intention of instilling fear into the sheeple of the world. we are benign.

Also make sure you to check your FCC regulations for amp usage in your area, it isn't worth getting in trouble.

Ok...I am not sure where to start with this one...but lets start here:

What makes you think "most people" do it this way? I would have to say that I completely disagree with your assertion here...and will continue to do so until you show me a scientific poll that shows "most" WarDrivers are not using external antennas.

I believe that their earlier ones had the connector and the newer ones don't. I would trust Fab Corp on this one as they have absolutely NOTHING to gain by saying that they don't have the connector when they actually do.

Be wary here! Accessing networks without authorization is a crime and has absolutely NOTHING to do with WarDriving. As far as I can tell, you aren't doing this..but your choice of wording is misleading.

Again I have to cry foul...most people are using that same 5dbi omni that you are. I would say that "some" people have built the cantenna...but it is more of a curiosity than anything that is actually utilized regulary.

As BW mentioned...be sure to make sure the legality of 2.4 Ghz amps where you live and the power restrictions.

Again...there is nothing to fear from WarDrivers as BW mentioned.

Wardriving is LEGAL. What you are doing is crossing that line. it may be a small step to cross the line, but you are still crossing it. Sort of lke the little line between shopping and shoplifting... you are simply on your honor to do the right thing. Is that too much to ask?

ok true guys, i did go a little off the deep end. just alot of kids i have talked to seem to use thier cards with out antenna help. just something i run into alot. maybe the *kiddie* factor is playing lol i dunno. as for the driving, i meant, not accessing, mearly mapping and recieving beacons. i map alot in the houston suberbs of conroe/woodlands. i need to get a nice GPS device though as i get tired of manually entering notes. to address the homemade can shotgun antenna, this is a very nice setup and i even plan on building one myself. im not knocking it at all, no way, just i think we need to stress the LOS for people who are just starting. Most dont get the results they are looking for with this setup. when i first started this, i didnt grasp that concept either. but after some research, and patience before investing in equipment, i found exaclty what results to expect from this antenna type etc. as for amp usage, your right, but since when did anyone agree with the FCC? i thought that was a kinda universal hatred there lol. FCC agreement is nice, but if im portable, and i have a very nice RX and TX gain happening, then im not gonna step down, especially when 2.4Ghz doesnt interfere with anything directly in the immediate sprectrum.

on a side note, i have been doin ALOT of research on satellites and stuff. seems there is not much info out there on this. if anyone is interested about satellite/radio shit or can contribute to my search for info, plz let me know. ohh and the thing on the proxim orinoco? should i just post some pics?

once again, i ment beacons, thats all. sorry for the mininterpretations. if you read, i said, not clearly but said.
"not on the net, but can always SEE something"
o well. im just as into the research side of wardriving as anyone else.

also i have a question. when i use netstumbler and i see networks etc, then i open up my proxim software, and it doesnt see them, is this due to like a threshold that the signal must acheive before it is acceptable to use? just wondering why some drop off and some dont even appear. netstumbler just grabs raw beacons/frames etc

and im sure chris is right with the fab corp thing. the only thing im clearing up is , yes the old B/G combo GOLD cards do have the connector, thats all.

here are some pics of my card and permanently stuck ass pigtail lol. o well at least it works

WTF what planet are you from? Why do you persist on telling everyone you enjoy breaking the law? You seem to keep lumping "everyone" into some weird "everyone" theory. stop it.

Sure there is, you are just looking in the wrong place, but since you enjoy not following laws, it is perhaps better that you cannot find said info.

              The way of the wardriver

Wardrivers are just curious about what is on the waves around them, this they log and post into databases, or make custom maps. I find to many people saying wardriving is accessing networks, cause haxors are so 1337 they can change settings in windows this is acually WarAccessing...or whatever you call it...some call it ILLEGAL, is not what the community does, it is what fucktards do, you don't want to be a fucktard do you?

naw.. see... this guy just ranks really high on the tard scale. not quite fucktard, as some knowledge appears to exist.. but most definately a tard. Is/was there a point to this thread?

If you think we are being rough here, just post that on the NS forums, you might notice some of us are on there...and the response will be much worse....

                    Radio info/clearing up

ok look, this is getting way drawn out. one of the reasons i avoid boards, and dont insert flame here, just read through. first of all, i never said anything about accessing peoples networks. i map access points and lately i have been trying to map out there coverage areas, which is proving to be a bitch due to weather conditions etc. for instance, i picked up a local sig way better one night in the rain than i ever have. i was curious, because i thought the higher you go into Ghz ranges, rain etc plays hell on the signal causing it to refract... one of the reasons why they dont use Ku band uplinks alot for TV. as for finding information about satellites, yes i have found a great deal blackwave, but no like FAQ's or anything, and so i had to learn what they were talking about through questions and or trial and error. this is good in a way for people like me who are genuienly interested, but not good for people who get frustrated easy. They talk on thier sites like you obviously know whats goin on lol. For info on the satellites, its not just the satellites i was talking about. there is a great deal of interesting things you can do, probably some is illeagal, but only on certain measures. for instance, with some basic equipment you can listen to analog phone calls from inmarsat phones, moslty the old ones, and alot of times they are drug dealers etc. from what i have been reading, and as you know, HAMs follow the laws to finest point, as long as you dont intercept government stuff or break a code, then everything else is fair game on the airwaves. this seems to be the general rule of thumb for receiving and listening to radio waves/satellites. i would like to post some of the info i have come accross as well as just a general guide to anyone starting out. but just to clear up, on the statement of the FCC, yes once again, that was a little off. sorry. as far as i know, with the amps, it really all depends. this is what i have noticed from email replies from companies etc. rflinx even sells a 1watt version to the public. here is the law stated on thier page
-The marketing, sale and use of power amplification devices are governed by and subject to Part 15 of the Rules and Regulations of the Federal Communications Commission. Such devices may only be sold to parties assembling certified RF transmission systems consisting of an intentional radiator, an external radio frequency power amplifier, and an antenna-
the only thing i dont understand on this is certified?? do they check your shit out? or do they want you to use non-homemade stuff? which i could understand. well i just wanted to say, sorry for any false information, and or misleading statements. remember, im on your side lol. if you are interested in any maps of houston, non gps but notes, then let me know. i am slowly compiling them. maps of conroe/parts of The Woodlands are available. thanks. also hyperlinktech has shitty tech support, they almost refuse to deal with you on the phone. i have had beyond great support from rflinx for my questions and concerns. i highly reccomend them.
Ohh blackwave, did you see the pics of my card??
                    http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/connectors.html
go there , and look a little over half way down, there is orinoco, and then some alprox thing, the other day that said proxim orinoco. well anyways, that orinoco connector they show, does not fit the proxim orinoco. so tell anyone asking.
