well no one get a gateway they are the real deal when it comes to a hunk of junk, the lid started to crack by the hinges and gateway said that it was my fault. The question here is after 2 months of just everyday use (not sitting infront of it opening and closing it like a game or something) should it start to crack into pieces like that, I dont think so, and not to mention the power supply plug broke so I had to take it apart so I could soldier a pigtail in so the damm thing would charge because guess what gateway said they would not warranty that either and then when I upgraded from winME to xp they said that they would not support the OS or any acompaning software and thus it would basicly void the warranty because I did not buy the upegrade from them and that is my experience with pc's im sure there are alot better pc manufactuers out there but mine was not that great. I am finally happy with my 12" powerbook although I wish I would have waited for the new 15"PB oh well. This does not discourage me from the pc market though I am currently building a pc with my daughter (4yo.) that will run a linux distro not sure which one but anyways sorry for the poor sentance structure and all the misspelling I kind of lose it when I think of my gateway, and as far as I know about that broadcom card they wont be releasing any info on there chipset in the near future, I guess they figure it is a security feature or something. Broadcom is the same chipset in the airport extreme and I do have a little bit of problems with distance and have not really had any big enough files to move to take advantge of the g side of it. well I am just rambling now and it is 2:23 am now so Im going to bed good night.

Learn to punctuate. Learn to seperate into Paragraphs. Even if you don't punctuate well, atleast try. I saw a few periods and comma's in there, but for the most part it looks like a run on sentence to me.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. Please understand though I had been up for a long time and could tell that there were problems with the body of the post.
None the less I hope I did not curse anyones gateway. Mine just seems to have way to many problems, maybe its just beginers luck!

I've had good experiences with thier servers and business workstations, provided you use them in the factory condition. Adding to or change the configuration and your asking for trouble.

Personally, for laptops, I go Toshiba all the way.

Thanks for the Heads up Chris, might want to X-post that to the NS forums.
I would definatly have to agree, although i have owned nothing but Compaq notebooks running linux, i decided to try out a Dell Inspiron 1100. I have had nothing but good luck and performance with it (with the exception of a video issue that i later resolved) But my fiance` purchased another model of the Latitude series and has nothing but problems with linux on it. So needless to say she is pretty pissed off and in the process of returning it for a higher class inspiron then mine that is known good with linux.

So when you say it is hit and miss with Dell, thats no joke. :)

So this is a list of all the "do not buys" what about the good buys? And will someone tell me why M$ is once again *required* on all laptops? Who's selling them without OS?

Not to be a jerk, but who cares? Even if I intended to use a Windows variant I still wipe the drive and do a clean install anyway. What difference does it make what OS the lappie ships with?

                My 2 cents...

Toshiba for notebooks. Be warned that their tech support blows, though. The "Software Update" NEVER has any updates (Oh, wait, a mouse driver once). I'm happy because I don't *need* their help, but your mileage may vary.

I've been though 6 of them, and I've never had any trouble with WD HDDs.

even with the shitty luck with the laptop, the customer service was so good that i wouldnt rule out another thinkPad next time....

If you would stop running that virtual head software BlackWave gave you I think that might fix the problem.... :D

Because if you are going to run nothing but Linux on the laptop, why should you have to pay $100+ for the "Microsoft Tax"? I rather spend that money on more RAM, beer, etc.

As for toshiba laptops, this Is hard to beat.. I bought one and it works like a champ, and for under a grand! :)
