Ask Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer whether some hackers contribute to the IT industry, and you'll get an emphatic, 'No!'"

This got me thinking about 2 things (1 more than usual for a work day):

1. How many people in IT that say they hate hackers have ever met any or done anything to get to 'know your enemy' outside of what the press reports.

2. Do you think it will ever be possible to claim hacking (the pure definition, not the media one) as a religion or identifiable group and be able to file charges under hate laws since they are making blanket claims that we are all criminal?

2. It could definetly happen some day, but it would be one hell of a venture to get it going. Can you imagine the naming possibilities?

What pisses me off are the companies that hate hackers, come out and talk shit, then quietly hire them. I worked for one of those companies and it burned me up every day till I left. Their PR folks talk about how we dont hire hackers and how hackers are bad and how we would never ever ever hire them, then pick me up SPECIFICLY because of my hacking background. Saying you hate hackers and having never met one is just ignorant. Saying you hate them then hiring them under the radar is just obnoxious.

1. Alot of them don't know their enemy in the least. My computer teacher, who also has a side job as the occasional IT consultant knows absolutely nothing about "The enemy". I was talking to him about hackers and he mentioned that "Takedown" book by john markoff and shinomura. That seems to be where his info comes from.

2. That would be cool if you could unify all the hacker scene like that, but With all the script kiddies about, it'd be freaking hard to do.

The thing that really ticks me off is how he said hackers don't innovate at all. The fact that hackers found the problems in Windows before microsoft did proves something doesn't it?

2. If we built a cathedral out of old computer parts and elected DT as Bishop, maybe. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

1. i know of one person that made an effort but he was stopped by the beaurocrapyness known as managment.

2. i would be willing to do anything to help the cause.

I also find it interesting that companies that claim to detest hackers (media def) are the same ones to hire them.

I dont think I will be adding "hackin" to my resume anytime soon. I find it humorous they say that....blamer, when his homie gates at one time was a hacker, little tidbit of a double standard.

You're forgetting M$'s standpoint: "If people would quit looking for flaws, there's wouldn't be any."

Security through obsurity, or ubsurdity as the case may be.


We were hacking the shit out of one product prior to shipment, and the production team actually said "We keep missing ship dates because you people keep breaking it." In other words, if we didn't test for bugs, then they culd ship the title and be done wih it. This is how most of the indusry thinks.

Hacker = Security engineer

So basicly, I can be called either one and be correct.. Penitration testing, network testing, code breaking, password cracking, and On site security are all part of what the normal security people do... .. sounds like hacking to me.

Noid's mini-rant (which hits the nail on the head.. many *cisco* companies *IBM* do this..) reminds me of the new Cisco commercial on now; showing all the "hackers" that were being arrested for trying to hack into systems protected by Cisco equipment.. It is rather sickning...
