ok sry if this is in the wrong place mods. I'm new to thr forum so give me a bit of time here. but i'm intrested in hacking NOT cracking and i was wondering what i should learn how to do and whats big at the moment. here is the long story you may skip this part cuz i mean it may be boreing lol :D. ok i'm big into comps and i got my very own one built and i've been thinking that i know the wires but i dont konw what they do or how it works i've read the book "a complete h@ckers handbook" by dr-k and was thinking that its a bit outdated... or is it... well sry for the n00bie here but just give me sum time and help and i hope to c ya next year at defcon :D

redhat isnt the best learning linux, get one that is more complicated to install, the whole process is a great learning tool. I suggest Slackware, it is a bit more complicated, but it blows redhat out of the water.

~Dreams: please consider searching the forums for 'linux' for more opinions on different linux distros. This has already been hashed out more than once.

It basically depends on one factor: do you want to learn linux or how to use linux? If the former, you may consider building it from scratch

Let's take a step back because I am still not entirely clear on this.

What EXACTLY is it that you want to learn.

No one can tell you how to be a hacker. People can give you guidelines or their own personal experiences. But, being a hacker of a journey of discovery. Each "hacker" becomes one along their own path.

You would be extremely hard pressed to find two people on this forum who followed the same exact path to become a hacker. Convege's path was probably different then ck3k's, Chris's different then Noids, Octalpussy's different then Nulltone....

You can ask us where to begin, and we may be able to tell you that. But once there it's up to you. You have to decided what you want to do, what you like and what you don't like. Do you enjoy programming or networking? Do you want to become a linux guru or become truly great with windows?

It's all up to you. So what is is that you exactly want to learn?

well... i want to learn what you think i should lol i dont know too much i dont want to be a script kiddie lol nope not me and i dont really know what i should disregaurd from the book i mentioned, i just want to learn. rember that i'm a hs student that dislikes his peers and well is maily over looked "our only crime is beging smarter then you" the mentor ;) i know my history but i got A+ easy so i'm just looking for sumthin more to learn :D

If you aren't sure about linux yet, I'd suggest that you download a Knoppix ISO and burn it to a cd and run that. It is very convenient if you are trying to make the switch from windows to linux since it is completely contained on the cd.

I am actually suprised this thread didn't make it to /dev/null within a few hours of it being posted.

You must go to a Philadelphia Public School then. I can tell from that lack of proper grammer. I have the book you need. It's the perfect book to get you started:
